JeffKennett Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 (edited) Hey guys, did some quick searching couldn't specifically find an answer.. So soz if this has been addressed before. I think I blew my gearbox in my 84 KE70 on the weekend, wondering what checks I should do to verify that it is the gearbox and not some other issue with the drivetrain. THE PROBLEM: Can engage any gear while engine is running and the car will not stall and nor will it drive. DIAGNOSED: If you rev the engine whilst in gear the tailshaft quickly rotates back and forth (talking less than 10mm of movement). Out of gear the car can be rolled. In gear the car can be rolled. In gear, engine running, car can be rolled. So I'm thinking diff is OK.. I guess what are your thoughts on the problem? anything else I should look at. Hassle I have at the moment car is sitting on a mire of clay so jacking her up will be interesting. Was planning to tow her to a mates place to do the work, but was looking at getting what I need to fix her up before hand. Ya I know stupid lol. oh and if u guys reckon it is the gearbox, anyone have KE70 K50 (seems like the smart move if it is the gearbox) in good nick they wanna part with  Noticed a few being up for sale.. though the threads seem fairly old. cheers JK Edited August 8, 2008 by JeffKennett Quote
Taz_Rx Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 What do you mean by "...the tailshaft quickly rotates back and forth (talking less than 10mm of movement)."??? So it doesn't spin??? or is this movement with your hand? Quote

Taz_Rx Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 Ok. So it sounds like the box then. mate once blew the smaller sun gear out of a ke55 diff. Put it in gear and the tail shaft would turn, but not make it through the diff. One of good things about K40 and K50 is they both have big inspection plates on the bottom. Pull it off and see if anything is obviously not right - Gives you a clear view of the whole gear set. Take a pic of the gear set too if you can. Quote

Redwarf Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 If you drop the oil and it's full of souvenirs, that'll point to it too. Quote
rolla kid ae71 Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 hey mate i think it might be ur input sharft cause the same thing happend to my ae71 so yeah i think it will be the box. Quote
JeffKennett Posted August 8, 2008 Author Report Posted August 8, 2008 thanks for the replies guys, managed to source a K50 from pick-a-part. $96 gamble though do have a 30 day warranty. Wondering do i need an extension housing seal? I read an old post from Taz_Rx Bolt straight in, no mods. HOWEVER, so corolla clutches are 19T, some are 21T, so just make sure the spline in right. wink.gif You won't find a k40/50 bellhousing gasket, because they don't exist!! The bell housing don't come off them. If you mean a gasket between the engine and bell housing, then they don't exist either. Not needed. So from that, do I actually need one? we talking the same thing? and I guess I need to confirm the clutches are the same yeah? thanks fellas.. Quote
irokin Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 There's a thin (1-2mm) metal plate that goes between the gearbox bell housing and the motor. IMO It needs to be there. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 Yeah the backing plate on the motor. But no gasket. You'll need a 19T spline clutch. Quote

Taz_Rx Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Yes ke55 and ke70 K50's and K40's all have the same input and output splines. ;) So no need to change clutch or tail shaft. Quote
Palmy Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 thanks taz, thats one less thing to worry bout lol Quote
Trent-KE30 Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 I would also check the clutch, This happened to my brothers 4K KE35 it would rev and you could shift all the gears but nothing, pulled the box off and the clutch center had broken off from around the clutch face.. Cheers Quote
