Johno Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 (edited) Sorry, this is not a corolla question but i really need help with this. My grandmother has a Ford Fairmont Gear station wagon. It was my cousin's car but lost interest in it because he doesn't have a license. It's reg expired June 2004 so its been sitting for a hell of a long time rusting away. Has not been started in over 2years. _________________________________________________________ **EDIT** Oh yeah. Its a EB fairmont with 3.9L multi point fuel injection engine. _________________________________________________________ Well me and my uncle went there this avro to try and get it running. We put wheels on it because it has been sitting on bricks. Put a new battery in it and tryed to start it. It took about 5 minutes to kick it over then it started. Ran perfect for about 5 seconds then stalled. Tryed to restart it and it ran rough and stalled again. We could not rev it over 2000rpm. Then when we touched the accelerator it would stall. Now it wont start at all. It got dark so we called it a day. Now this is where i need your help. What would it be to make it start now not run at all? Water/condensation in the cylinders? Dirty spark plugs? Water in the petrol? Stale petrol? Anyone got other idea's? Cheers, Johno Edited July 28, 2008 by Johno Quote
furryfrog Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 is it getting petrol to the fuel rail? might be worth changing the fuel filter, fuel turns to a caramel like texture when it sits for a long time. just start with the basics, fuel, spark, check the dizzy cap isnt full of water/condensation maybe try some start ya bastard see if it runs on that Quote
irokin Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 If its been sitting with fuel in it for that long you're going to have heavy corrosion in the fuel tank at an absolute minimum, possibly through all the fuel lines too. :S Quote
JiP Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Maybe try mixing some fresh fuel into the tank as the old fuel loses octane the longer it sits. I'd change the filter too. Quote
Johno Posted July 28, 2008 Author Report Posted July 28, 2008 (edited) So maybe when it started for 5 seconds it was using the petrol in the fuel rail? So maybe the fuel filter is blocked or maybe the injectors? I was going to go there tomorrow, take out the sparks and clean them and replace the fuel in the tank for fresh petrol and change the filter Do you think I dd any damage by starting it without changing the petrol? Kid-Ae Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 If it keeps happening and the fresh fuel doesnt do the trick, pour some fuel through the injectors and have a crack, should start. No damage done with the start, just wouldnt have liked the low octane goo Quote
towe001 Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Ford backwards is - D - driver R - returns O - on F - foot But anywhat i'd change the filter just to be on the safe side of things. Have a look at the filter in the tank as well. Quote
dashills Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 an eb series 1 ( i wouldn't bother ) now they tend to have the fuel pumps go on them , the oil will be a good start and filter ,drain petrol tank and refill , blow out the lines and rail change filter . to thin out your oil put about 1 ltr of deisel down the oil filler and drain it , and check the main fuse if it doesnt work buy a holden or rolla Quote
Rich_Rolla Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 (edited) Change fuel. Check sparks. Check Oil. Change filter. It's fuel injected so I don't see the need to pour fuel into the injectors. BTW. If you're thinking about selling it could you send some pics, specs and some pics of the rust. Edited July 29, 2008 by Rich_Rolla Quote
Johno Posted July 29, 2008 Author Report Posted July 29, 2008 Thanks for all the comments and help to everyone. :S I went there this morning and put fresh petorl in it and it runs fine now. I thought it was a fairmont gear but its just a fairmont. Digital dash and climate control made me think it was a gear. Seems like a good car. Spent all afternoon cleaning it and vacuming it. Just got to fix the rust in some spots I think my mum wants to buy it but if not, i'll let you know about it rich rolla. I better stop here, don't want to start turning this into a rides/projects thread.. lol Thanks again, Johno Quote
Budowski Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 good to see you got it running was a good read to get the mind going :S Quote
