Last night i may have given my ke20 4k a bita beans. not too much but enough. I noticed after i did this i developed a shaking vibration in the steering wheel and gear knob (through all gears, specially cruising in 4th n 5th.) I kept driving, and came to a stop at the lights and when i took off, there was a rattling tin can clunk sort of noise. The noise appears to be coming from the engine, but at times almost seems like its coming from the back. So now it has the tin can noise (when taking off and changing gears only) and vibration/shakes through the gear stick and steering wheel.

Took it to see a mate to see if he knew what was going on, but he said could possible the uni joint? its got me and him stumped.

anyone else had this problem or one like it??

Help! :bash:

Cheers

Hi if it's your uni joint then you will be able to feel some play in your drive shaft when you try to move it by hand (shouldn't be any play).

Put you car up on stands climb under and see if there's any movement.

If so replace as soon as possible. should be a cheep job depending on the condition of your yoke.

google will give you all the info required to do the job.

I can't see how it would be the front uni, I only just replaced it a month or so before you bought it, because I shattered it pretty good doing a big skid lol :S

Worth having a look though, could be the rear one?

Cheers, Ben.

May also be the shaft in the gear box that the solid gear set runs on. They have a habbit of wearing and causing clunks/rattles. Hard to tell where the noise is coming from too.

If you don't have any luck with the uni, get some gearbox oil and remove the inspection plate on the bottom of the GB. Grab the solid gearset and see if it moves around at all. Replacements are still available through toyota aparently.

I have had similar thing happen to me. Drove for a week the first time thinking I blew a gear or something in my gear box. Again similar stuff started to happen to me after a bit of a flog.

Eventually it gave way..The clutch that is. What happened the plate with the springs all the metal tabs that rivit it to the fibre part snapped so the clutch center was spinning inside the fibre part that gets gripped by the flywheel and pressure plate.

Now I was able to drive as after a few clucks some tabs gripped this went on for a week till it all wore away. Ended up smashing pressure plate to.

Fixed it. Then after a flog 6 months later hard in a paddock. Same thing happen only this time all I got was a light shudder in clutch pedal. then one day driving up a hill accelerating in 3rd on way home from work revs just hit the red on the tacho and I started slowing down.

This is a problem I have experienced. Always happened when using heavy duty clutch and a stock clutch. So could be the clutch. Only way to know but is to remove the gear box but :S

Cheers

Cameron

EDIT: The tin can noise also happened to me on the first time the clutch came apaart on take off and gear change cause you were taking pressure off the clutch so it took a bit for the tabs to engage again. But on high way normal road after I got going in a gear I couldn't hear anything.

I think I have this prblem with my K50 box, as when I first got my KE30 on the road it had the same vibrations described in the 1st post. I originally thought it was the Uni's so I changed them over to new units. While being better there is still vibration coming from the drivline :S.

Anyone have any idea roughlly how much this would cost to fix?

my widget was off axis and caused a random sound whenever I changed radio station - perhaps this is the problem you're having?

Seriously if you can rotate your uni joint 1/3 a turn, ALARM BELLS ARE RINGING!

100-150 for a rebuild of your tailshaft.

ok took it into the mechanic today, its still there as i type. They called me to confirm uni joint was the problem. However the rattling i described was apparently coming from something loose around the starter motor, Like a little metal plate. He also said i need new struts, and that he can't source them. so hopefully fellow rollaclub members can assist me there.... :bash: report back when i pick it up from the mechanic late this arvo...

Cheers
