OK first off the scenario.

A few days ago, I was having problems with the starter motor on the 4K in my KE25.

Got the car home, jacked it up and figured out that it was infact loose - there was only 1 bolt holding it on, and that bolt was completely undone.

So tweaked it up and all was running fine.

Here we are a few days later and I take the KE25 to work as I do every day (since my rx7 is broken too..its not my week).

I go to grab some lunch from Subway today, which is about 4km down the road from work...car started absolutely fine, and I drive down to Subway and park up to go inside the store. Come back 5mins later to start the car, I turn the key and....nothing.

Every time i turn the key I can hear a click (guess this is a starter solonoid?) however the starter motor isnt whirring or trying to do anything!

I checked all the lights and stuff but thats fine, theres nothing that could possibly drain the battery that fast so I guess maybe something else wrong with the starter motor again.

I checked the starter motor attached securely, starter solonoid is clicking, the coil is all hooked up and all the leads are on the spark plugs but nothing...

So some nice guy tries giving me a hand to push start it, put it into 2nd...drop the clutch and it just locks up the wheels and skids to a stop...

I've just now towed it home after work and tried to roll start it while being towed @ about 30-35km/h and still the wheels just lock up and skid until I let the clutch back out. Tried it again just rolling down our very steep driveway, but the wheels just lock up and the car just jumps and skids.

Is a toyota 4k with a K50 (i think) 5 speed gearbox.

original starter motor afaik, weber dcd carby.

has a bosch coil with newish leads & ngk sparkplugs.

car has plenty of coolant that I can tell, oil was just done only 1000km's ago

Does anyone know what the cause could be?

At first I thought perhaps wiring between the battery & the starter motor, or perhaps the starter solonoid - but even then surely it should still roll start?

Was thinking maybe something has gone in the engine and its seized up, but then should the starter motor still not be trying to crank?

I'm not THAT mechanical so perhaps someone that can point me in the right direction...

Should I try smacking the starter motor with a hammer? :)

I'm now carless until I can get this fixed as my rx7 is off the road for at least the next 3 months :hmm:

hey, sounds like it may be a flat battery, when you hold the key down and it clicks? try load testing it. if that dosent work, get someone to hold the key onto start and then tap the starter motor on the casing, this sometimes works if the brushes in the starter have worn down.

cheers for reply man.

its definately not the battery - ive checked that out

just tried giving the starter a bit of a tap but hasn't made a difference :)

sure the starter might be stuffed.

but even with the starter stuffed it should still start when push starting.

turn the car over manually and test if you have any spark coming outta the dizzy.

if you got spark check fuel etc.

also check the wire that goes to the dizzy if it has come off it aint gona start.

pull the plugs out and try your rollstarting technique

sounds like its seized one way or another

hydraulic lock

if it doesnt work

pull the starter off and see if its thrown out and seized.

a wack with a hammer wont hurt anyway, maybe try it first

trying to roll start it in 2nd gear as usual, but just seems to be locking up. definately isn't the battery.

fuel isnt an issue - thats coming into the carby just fine.

will give that stuff a try tomorrow- its goin to be a bit hard being at the bottom of a hill but i will figure something out :)

cheers for a few things to try guys.

and yeah when i unbolt the starter might give it a small love tap with the hammer :hmm:

tried roll starting in first?

clacking sounds like the battery has low voltage, Hope you are not measuring the voltage at the battery before you try and crank it over. What voltage does it drop to when you are trying to key it over? To really test a battery you need to check its acidity with a hydrometer and load test it once at full charge..

Other possibility is that the starter was damaged when the bolts came out, Could have smegged the drive and it is hanging in mesh causing the motor to not want to spin...

pull the starter out and check the gears arent siezed or stuck in the engaged position. if they are, leave it out and try roll starting it then just hope to hell you don't stall out at the lights
