maxyboy55 Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 With me only being 15 and the new laws in nsw saying that i couldn't drive around in a modified car, my dad suggested that i put a dohc head on my 4k, seeing as most other brands of engines can swap heads eg. subaru 2.5l with 2l and ford 1.8l and 2l heads i was wondering if there were a toyota head with dohc that would bolt straight up, without too many modifications. i was hoping that a 4age head would bolt up seing as they're relitivly cheap in comparison and would be easier to find max Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 No DOHC was made for a 4k. There was a rare limited number of DOHC made for a 4k, used to race is starlets if i remember corectly BUT good luck finding one. Hope that helps, and welcome to RC Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 Um no. Do a little bit of research on DOHC, SOHC and OHV engine and you'll discover that's a little bit of a silly question. The only bolt on DOHC head you could bolt to a K motor is the 130E (happy Irokin! :)) head, its commonly referred to round here as a 3k-r, but you've got more change of retro fitting an RB26DETT head than FINDING one of those, ie forget it. :( and you say you're not allowd to drive a modified car. ;) How is a head swap any different to the 3 C's!? maxyboy55 Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) what i was going to do was take the 4k head off, make a new timing chain/find a belt, take the lifters out so the original cam is only driving the dizzy and put on a 4age head (for example). my dad ( a mechanic) and i had worked out this plan only this morning, so we're not too sure of what dohc, in-line 4 heads toyota make and what would have the same bolt pattern. it should work, if there is a head like that out there :( and by modified, i mean no engine enlargments, turbos, or anything that you would have to get an engineers certificate for Edited June 25, 2008 by maxyboy55 Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 id say its not worth it, Just drop a 4AGE in and be done with it Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 So what you're proposing isn't a "modified" engine? :( Quote
maxyboy55 Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 id say its not worth it, Just drop a 4AGE in and be done with it the problem with putting a 4age in is that i'd have to modify the engine mounts, have a new gearbox etc. the other main reson that i want to stick mith my old 4k block is that i want to start hillclimbing when i get better at driving and i don't really want to go up into the 1600's class, staying in the 1300's (that i think there is) so if anyone out there has a 4k block/motor and a 4age head/motor, and they could check the bolt pattern i would greatly appreciate it :( Quote
KE ping it real Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) Why don't you just work the f#%K out of your 4k motor? Stick a nice size cam in, port 'n' polish the head, get it port matched, electronic ignition, get yourself a weber and some extractors and have a ball!! I've got a worked 4k and i have to say it goes pretty damn hard for a N/A 1300 Wouldn't go as hard as a 4age but it sure smokes a lot of newer, small twin cam cars that are on the road today If it's important for you to stay a 1300 for class reasons then this alternative would be a whole lot less noodle scratching than trying to put a DOHC head on a single cam poshrod engine :( Anyway.....thats my two cents And welcome ;) Edited June 25, 2008 by KE ping it real Quote
maxyboy55 Posted June 25, 2008 Author Report Posted June 25, 2008 i've put electronic ignition out of a 5k in it and i noticed a little difference, then i got addicted... i see that in every ones opinion putting a dohc head on my 4k would be hard and annoying, but i'd like to do it (and potentialy make a 4kg-c) Quote
Falken_KE30 Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 its either a 4k, or a 4AGE for me. not half and half. Its more work then needed. by time you get all the work done, and all the custom sht done. you would have had a nice healty 4AGE in the bay. Then again, I'm just not wasting $$ on a 4k when i know i want to go a 4AGE. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 :( ;) :) :lolcry: :lolcry: Dude.......listen........please!!! If it could have been easily done, it would have been done by now!! The fact that it hasn't been done already should be enough to convince you that it is simply not worth the effort and expence. There is a lot that can be done to a 4k performance wise, a lot still keeping it visual stock. Have a good read of the FAQ, discuss with your father what you have learnt today and re-plan what you would like to do with your car. :lock: Quote
Felix Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 (edited) The bore would be to small on the 4k. 4age has 81mm bore, 4age valves would hit. You would need a 5k with its 80.5mm bore. With a 4k to adapt a twincam head, you would probably be best looking at the 4e-fe heads. Better still if you want to keep it around 1300cc and want a twincam, adapt in a complete 4e-fe.
