corolln Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 hey guys, I'm thinking of buying another corolla. to save the trouble of getting the engine tunned or what ever ( only casue I'm spent money on getting my 3k fixed n running sweet) i was planning on swapping my current 3k out of my ke30 which has an auto box and swapping the engines over, both engine wil be 3k's. the 3k which run of the auto box will be going on to a manual. i have no time during the week due to work and the only time i would ahve to do it is over the weekend.. I'm not to mechanicaly minded but know how to do bits n piece ( i aint stupid other wise) what would i need to do the swap and how much time would it take? CAN I DO THIS??? any help would be really helpful thanks cam Quote
WinKE55 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 (edited) Of course you can do it silly. I can answer that one for you hehe. I haven't done an engine swap, though I have pulled one out. It doesn't take long, maybe 30mins - 1hour if you know your stuff. And also if you have an engine crane and stand. Raise the car up with a jack, put 2 stands under the sills, lower the jack and put it under your gearbox area and jack it up a little untill it just touches. Then disconnect everything connecting to the engine, and the gearbox, take out the center console where your auto might be bolted down to the body, remove the tailshaft from the diff. You will more then likely have to remove the rear crossmember to get the auto out. Probably suggest draining the auto first though if you like to get messy then no need. They should be pretty straight forward to get it out. Just try and remember which bolts go where etc. Plus I am pretty sure you can do it man =] Good luck. Edited June 16, 2008 by WinKE55 Quote
corolln Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 so once everything is out i got all that sussed been having at look.. the only thing i got to get my head round is connecting it to the manual casue I'm not wanting to run the auto box in the other car. what is todo there?? thanks man I'm ready todo this now =D Quote
Clapped out Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 You need to swap over the flexplate/flywheel and clutch, cheers phatke30! Quote
ke30dude Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 If you are putting the motor from an auto into a manual car you may need to fit a spigot bush into the auto motors crank. :) Quote
fusion Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 For manual conversion you will need at least: - Manual gearbox (sounds like you have this) - Pedal box for clutch pedal - Master cylinder (links up with the clutch pedal) - Slave cylinder (could already be on the gearbox) - Tailshaft (the auto tailshaft may be fine, not 100%) - Flywheel and clutch plate That should be the main of it I think. Swapping engines should be pretty easy. One idea I just had, if you want to make things easier and not forget what goes where, get a roll of white tape. Than take a black texta and mark every line (electrical, oil, fuel, etc) so that way it might make it easier for you to attach them again :) Besides that make sure you have radiator coolant, engine oil and any other service parts like spark plugs or oil filter. corolln Posted June 16, 2008 Author Report Posted June 16, 2008 thanks guys and the idea of taping things great idea makes it easy for me.. yeah I'm pretty much just swaping a 3k from one to the other except the one is auto.. If you are putting the motor from an auto into a manual car you may need to fit a spigot bush into the auto motors crank. gotta help me with that one. and how easy is to swap over the felxplate flywheel and cluth. will i know hwere this goes or.... sorry for all the question... would be easier just to pay some one its sounding like :) Quote
fusion Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Flexplate, flywheel and clutch all bolt onto the back of the motor if i remember correctly. You may need a clutch aligner tool otherwise I don't think the gearbox will slide on properly. You may want to check gearbox oil levels aswell as it will probally drain out the rear from having no tailshaft in. Quote
philbey Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Torque wrench for flywheel bolts. If you can get new flywheel bolts as well that's always a nicety. Seriously, you need a torque wrench.... I didn't have one once...... ouch..... Quote

Clapped out Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 - Master cylinder (links up with the clutch pedal)- Slave cylinder (could already be on the gearbox) Just so we don't confuse the poor bloke, there will be only a cable, cheers phatke30! Quote
ca18rolla Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 you will need to allign the clutch. You really need someone to show u so u understand what it means. You can hire a clutch alligner or use a old input shaft and can hire torque wrenches as well. The white tape idea works really well i would do this for sure. Just wondering why you don't just drive the new car with the old motor though? Quote
