Roo Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 hey my 4k just blew its head gasket, just wondering how hard it is to change and what type of tools i need to do the job? how much is a new gasket and where is the best place tp get it them from? cheers Quote
Redwarf Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 standard tools, a Gregory's manual if you haven't done it before, and a torque wrench. (Last one very important.) I can do one in around an hour on a standard car. If you haven't done one, three maybe four hours. Kits available through any car parts store, and while it's off, you may as well send the head for a quick reco (around$300, but money well spent). Quote
Taz_Rx Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 If you don't "reco" the head then atleast get it planed (just to make sure its 100% straight) which should only cost you around $40-$50. :) Some people say not to use anything but a genuine toyota gasket (which is around $90), but I haven't had any problems with $23 permaseal ones!! Each to there own, but genuine stuff will always be the most expensive. Quote
chrisandliz[RL] Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 pffffft, I payed $13 for my last one, and $3.90 for the manifold gasket. it took me 27 minutes, it's a push rod engine. dead easy! Chris Quote
[email protected] Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 $13 bucks, what was it 3 ply cardboard and supper glue :) how long you had that for? Quote
philbey Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 supper glue, sounds delicious. I'll be doing mine tomorrow, i'll see if I Can top 27 minutes! Quote
Felix Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 27 minutes,... I'd spend close to that just cleaning the block surface. Do it properly, and do it once. Quote
Roo Posted May 22, 2008 Author Report Posted May 22, 2008 ok, will go buy a torque wrench tomorrow I'm not going to reco the head as i have planned for 4age in the next month or so but just want to go a the ke70 cruise this weekends so i might aswell fix it in my Gregory's manual it sayu to remove rocker arms and shafts to me thats just a waste of time basicly i was thinking of taking the mainfolds off mark the timing, diaconnect anything connected to head then start undoing the head bolts? cheers Quote
philbey Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Wont even need to bother marking your timing, just undo the head bolts and pull it off. The joy of pushrods.... Quote
