Junior Posted May 3, 2004 Author Report Posted May 3, 2004 Let us know what you think of this shot.... Looked pretty sick I reckon. Quote
demuire Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 Junior: What are those brakes off? And heh, the diff looks sooo stock :) What's with the 2 sets of leaf spring mounts? And I'm guessing that last photo is on the bumpstops :D Quote
Junior Posted May 3, 2004 Author Report Posted May 3, 2004 Yep diff looks pretty stock... Just a little larger and also has the R31 disc brakes on the back. Front brakes are RA60. Last shot... no bump stops.. no struts actually. Looks FAT though. And as for the 2 spring mounts thing... The second one is actually the swaybar mounts from the r31 diff... They never got removed as they may one day be used. Last pic for today also Quote
demuire Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 Very nice... We have to go for a cruise sometime :) Although you'll have to drive real slow so that I can keep up :D Quote
MD0086 Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Dam i like that Maybe one day my car will be like that :) Michael Quote

escorpse Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Q; how much did it cost total, for the r31 diff and to shorten it? as this one of the alternatives someone has told me i can do for my car (ke70) as i am still running a standard diff with gze turning it. i don't expect it to last too long. Quote
Junior Posted May 4, 2004 Author Report Posted May 4, 2004 There is a bit of work involved in the diff. This particular one cost in total around $100 with new slotted rotors. We used: * R31 silhouette Skyline diff complete, shortened 130mm * One axle shortened 130mm * New Slotted Disc Rotors * New Pads * Diff had LSD fitted along with new bearing and wheel bearings * Skyline mounts removed and the new mounts welded on. Then you also need to modify the tailshaft to suit. Hope this helps Quote
escorpse Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 $100? damn that is cheap for it. so the diff actually sits to one side a bit i am gathering as u only shorten on side of the housing and one axle? do u know how about much someone would charge to shorten these parts? welding should not be a prob as my uncle could do it. and how much does a lsd go for on these? trying to weigh which diff conversion to do. there are a few ideas around and trying to work out the best vs price one to do. Quote
demuire Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 I think he probably means $1000. The skyline diff is actually longer on one axle (not sure by how much), I'm guessing the longer axle is 130mm longer... Still, that's pretty darn cheap for a pretty much bolt in LSD diff that will be able to take a fair bit of abuse, not to mention the LSD centers aren't too expensive (although I hear they don't last all that long). Escorpse: wanna get 2 done at the same time? :D Alternatively I'm thinking of using a TA22 diff, will just have to get the existing mounts cut off and leaf spring mounts welded on, I can pay in cash or in beer :) Quote
escorpse Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 yeah heard about using them. i am looking at it at the moment thou, i prob want be doing it for about 4 months unless i destroy my diff with the new power that is going to be going through once i get it back from the shop. Quote
Junior Posted May 4, 2004 Author Report Posted May 4, 2004 Yeah my mistake, i did mean $1000 The diff was shortened 130mm in total. That is 50mm off one end, and 80mm off the other. Axles in these, like any diff are two different lengths. You use the shorter axle in the opposite side to which it came out of, and get the longer one shortened and resplined 130mm shorter. Reason for this is the minimum an axle can be shortened is 100mm as it tapers done and the spline on the end is larger than the axle. I have purchased an LSD skyline diff for $275 complete, but I just sold an LSD out of an EF XR6 (which is interchangable) for $300. Hope this helps BTW : It costs me $100 to get an axle shortened and resplined. Quote
Junior Posted May 4, 2004 Author Report Posted May 4, 2004 Here are some picture of the axles These First two pictures show the difference between the axles. Shortest one is the new shortened and resplined axle, and the other two are the standard axle, Short and long. And the new sline after being shortened. Quote
demuire Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Junior: Actually come to think of it $1000 is pretty darn good for an LSD *disc brake* rear end... What with slotted discs, new bearings and the like... Do you recon you could hook me up with one? :) BTW, what ratio is that running? Cause if I'm not mistaken the R31's came with 3.9's? When I was looking at using one of these before I heard that using Pintara centers you can get 4.1's (which I'd prefer - or higher) Quote
