Gspec Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 Mike Portnoy = Drum Freak. Mike Portnoy = superficial drummer His ability to play slightly complcated rythems... not bad. His technique... shit house. His dynamics.... pathetic. His expressive ability... below human. His musicality... limited. He is like a human drum machine with LIMITED programabilty. Sorry to jump your post but I just don't inderstand why anyone rates drummers like mike portnoy when there are BRILLIANT drummers like Buddy Rich, Moe Morello, Elvin Jones, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Matt Johnson, Jim Chapin, Steve Smith :S Quote
4DRFRK Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 i used to be the lead vocalist in dollar bill society on the coast then last we went our own ways mainly rock covers my new roomate is a guitarist we are working on something mainly more a laid back fiasco over beers so I'm not a musician but I'm into it all , oh and yeah i can play drums but only if someones desperate Quote
bLinded_ Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 I am a guitarist so I guess I can say I don't know all that much about drums. But in my books, anyone who can drum the crazy time shifts with LTE, DT (Petrucci) is pretty decent. I really can't judge a drummer by their Dynamics etc, but like you said he is a human drum machine. I am not saying he is the best drummer going, but I think he does an amazing job, same with all other progressive drummers. I don't know many drummers names, but basically all progressive drummers are awesome Spiral Architect, Pain of Salvation, Spastic Ink and the likes. I just think the way that they can change in and out of different timings constantly is impressive to watch/hear. But yeah, I havn't been offended by anything you said :S You're a drummer and can obviously make a better analysis of other drummers. I just mentioned Portnoy as a freak as to me, the things he drums is pretty damn technical. Quote
Gspec Posted May 16, 2008 Report Posted May 16, 2008 guitarists.. it figures :S I get what you mean about the changes in prog, though i'm not a huge fan, my mate is and i have to say playing prog with him is quite fun.... especially the dramatic tempo changes. Technicallity sould be no more than 25% of players music. theory, technique, feel/emotion/expression, philosophy and primal enjoyment are all equily as important, if not more so. :) Quote
Astro Boy Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 I'ma Guitarist been playing for a year or more... I play in different areas from blues to rock 'n' roll ect. I'm using a Ibanez Ex Series and a Spider 3 Line Six 15wat Amp. :P Quote
corolla_nut Posted July 13, 2008 Report Posted July 13, 2008 I'm a guitarist, haven't picked it up for about 5 months now though... :( been busy with TAFE and work and moving around alot! Started playing in Year 10, so 4 years ago now. Performed once at a high school conecert with my boyfriend's band. Tried to start a band with a couple of my mates but they weren't very organised and it fell through :( typical of us... Trying to play it a bit more often. I saw a post where one of you were in a band with two girls and two boys and one of the chicks could scream better than a bloke, a couple of well known bands have chick screamers, you should check it, In This Moment and Guano Apes are two good examples, great bands! simsey Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 (edited) Hi guys I'm a drummer, been playing for 3 years and I'm self taught. I play in a band called SACRAMENT. We are a 3 piece death metal/grind band that began in 2005 (started the band when i started drums lol). We have slowly developed a style of Death metal that incorperates fast brutal riffs, humorous and sick lyrics, un-predictable vocals and strange photos of us drinking. We tour all over New Zealand and have played with a few big names here in the metal scene.. 8 foot sativa, sinate, dawn of azazel and melbourne grind band "odious embowel". We have yet to venture across the ditch to play some aussie gigs. Hopefully we'll get the chance to in the next couple of years.. maybe even come along to some of you aussies corolla cruises if i time it right! My 5 all time favourite drummers... they're like gods to me lol Derek Roddy - Hate Eternal Flo Mounier - Cryptopsy George Kollias - Nile Mike Fitzgerald - Gutteral Secrete Pete Sandoval - Morbid Angel Some of the bands i listen to are the likes of sikfuk - cephalotripsy - guttural secrete - devourment - pig destroyer - mortitian - cryptopsy - cannibal corpse - dyscrasia - circle of dead children - drowning in phemaldehyde - screaming afterbirth - mc bushpig - condemned and a few others.. if you're into metal then these are definetaly worth checking out. But anyways, we have a 5 track EP which we are currently trying to get out there a bit so.. Its completely free, if you're interested in a copy of your own, just PM me your name and adress and ill send one away. I'll send one to you anywhere in the world. check us out on myspace http://www.myspace.com/sacramentnz and theres a couple of vids on youtube of us live (video from a fairly drunk gig we played in our countrys capital, Wellington) (note the american flag on the wall in this one, its not coz I'm american, its because i have a huge passion for american cars :( ) we'll thats my two cents Edited July 15, 2008 by simsey Quote
marksKE25 Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 I'm not in a band, but i do do sound mixing, stage lighting and vision. my work desk... , does it count? Quote
Raven Posted July 15, 2008 Report Posted July 15, 2008 (edited) I think some of you drummer peoples out there are forgetting the great metal drummers. The one I'm talking about is ex-Nile and ex-Vital Remains drummer Tim Yeung, who's now in Divine Heresy. You're a worthy drummer if you can play fast and precise, not just slow and precise and he sure has earned a name for himself. :) Edited July 15, 2008 by Raven Quote
bLinded_ Posted July 16, 2008 Report Posted July 16, 2008 Pretty impressive band you guys have got going there Simsey. I havn't listened to that genre of music for a while, but still, it made me bust out my Psycroptic album. Quite impressed by your drumming too. If you guys come on an Australian tour make sure you swing by Wagga :hmm: In other news: Got me my dream guitar finally! Schecter C7 Hellraiser <3 :) Quote
