David[RL] Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 (edited) hey, I need some help here ( again, hehe ) I want to lower my ke70 about 80mm.. at least 40mm.. then I suspect I need new shocks and springs because they're never changed before i think and they feel pretty tired.. what should I buy? I have some spare coilovers for my ae86 with alot of different springs / shocks in my garage.. could I use them? do I need to convert my setup to make the ae86 coil-overs to fit? pictures: http://riiber.net/coilovers/ am I missing something to make them fit? ( it stands '400 200 hk6 - 49218 2580 1370' on the shocks mounted on the coil overs, and 300 200 44038 on the other two shocks, is that the ratio for (de-)compression? if it is.. is it good for street use? ) also.. I've found lowering springs for the back of the car for ae86.. not ke70 I've heard that I can buy bilstein shocks for ford escort mk2 for the back of the car.. are the springs / shocks for ae86/te71/ae70/ke70 all similar? help wanted! :P Edited January 12, 2005 by David Quote
Super Jamie Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 for that much lowered, you're going to need shorter stroke shocks and modified struts, there's an ae86 page about this, i do believe on club4ag. i'll see if i can find it considering you're going to that much trouble, you may as well convert to height adjustables as well. can you even lower the back 80mm without mods? thats huge Quote
1G-GTE KE70 Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 boltcutters + springs = dodgy and illegal but it will do the trick haha Quote
Medicine_Man Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 boltcutters + springs = dodgy and illegal but it will do the trick haha Now thats cost cutting, he he he Quote
demuire Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Or just get spring clamps, that's pretty cheap too, and then you can raise or lower your car as required :) Quote
kangaroosa Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 I have lowered my ke30 3" at the rear and 2 1/2" at the front. With stock 13" rims, the top of the tyre is level with the gaurd. At the front i used the rear springs from and EB FORD Falcon. They are exactly the same diameter across, but they are also a thicker gauge coil. Get a pair of these from the wreckers and choppy choppy. My car is low and stiffer than standard. I don't have any problems with the struts (they have never broken). If you decide to chop some springs - just make sure you chop the top of the spring off, so the bottom of the spring is still flattened out, and will locate itself in the strut. The rear leaf srings have been reset and had an extra leaf put in - they too are stiff as all buggery. I don't know if the ke70 has the same diameter springs as the ke30, but its worth looking into if your going for the cheap option. I first enquired at pedders for lowered springs, and their lowered spring were exactly the same height, coil diameter, and amount of coils as my standard ones. I didnt risk wasteing the money and went for my option instead. Quote
Super Jamie Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 ke30 and 55 have same diam coils (big) ke20 and 20 and 70 have same diam coils (small) Quote
David[RL] Posted January 13, 2005 Author Report Posted January 13, 2005 (edited) okay.. I have considered of just chopping the springs.. but the springs are old and crap, and not stiff enough.. I need something stiffer and lower.. if I chop them they well be even less stiff than it's right now.. right? well these fit my ke70? : they are made for ae86.. Edited January 13, 2005 by David Quote
demuire Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 Wow, they look like they've been to the bottom of the ocean and back :) And no, cutting your springs won't make them softer, but they'll be lower and just as soft, which is usually not a good thing. Quote
Super Jamie Posted January 13, 2005 Report Posted January 13, 2005 no, you'll need ae86 steering arms to put them in your ke70 mathematically, cutting springs does make them slightly stiffer, but it's dodgy as f@$k and you just shouldn't do it. there is no law that says custom springs have to be captive, but it's illegal to chop Quote
David[RL] Posted January 17, 2005 Author Report Posted January 17, 2005 (edited) okay... :) but then I will either chop my springs all over and just buy new shocks, or make some sort of adjustable coilovers in front and chop springs at the back.. I know koni makes shocks for te70/te71/ce70, but ke70 is not listed.. anyone know if they fit? it's should fit right? but I want to be 100% sure before I buy something expenssive :P bilstein doesn't make shocks for ke70 any longer?.. anyone has a suggestion to what I should buy? I want a set for lowering.. else I just could buy new shocks from toyota here cheaper than koni, etc.. Edited January 17, 2005 by David Quote
David[RL] Posted January 18, 2005 Author Report Posted January 18, 2005 does shocks for te71/te70/ce70/ fit on ke70? Quote
rwdrolla Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 demuire, what u said about the spring clamps, how do they work? are they safe for everyday driving? the occasiong fang round a corner?? might use it as a cheap method of lowering the back of my car. Quote
Redwarf Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Don't even entertain the thought. Save up. Buy new springs. If it's worth doing, do it properly. Quote
demuire Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 No, spring clamps are uber dodgy. Do what Rob says, get new springs. Quote
