Petrol Tank Dial

My petrol dial only ever goes up to half full, even with a full tank. Any thoughts on how to fix it, or do I need a replacement sender unit?

best way to test is to take the wire that goes to the sender to frame and see if you get full actuation of the dial.. (They work on resistance) If it stays half way there may be a short in the wire to frame somewhere, Otherwise it would be the sender..
