fourwheeldemon Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 (edited) hey guys I'm in need of some assistance as I'm buildnig a turbo setup for my 4k ke70 the idea so far is to use... -mitsibishi turbo -blitz external gate -350 holley -3k bigport head (with a full port job on it) -turbo grind on the cam -front mount -carter fuel pump -bosh coil -5k dizzy -oringed block -plus more but i feel that the pistons wont last long so i have to choices 1. use 4k dished piston... do u have any, i can't find any? lol 2. use turbo chrade pistons... how easy is this to do? what needs to be done? will they bolt up to the stock rods, etc? thanks guys from pat p.s. any help will be usefull Edited January 10, 2005 by fourwheeldemon Quote

I believe (As I didn't build this engine, a guru did) that he made telfon plugs for the ends of the gudgeons as they don't have circlips, or are just plain different in their mounting. Are you in Brisbane, because my guy will do it for you. Do they bolt on? Simple answer no, but they can be made to fit. Â ACL should do dished 4K pistons. Â Look to upgrade your big end bolts, they're always a weak point. Â Power isn't all in the port job, alot has to do with the valve grind too. Quote
Super Jamie Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 i'd forget the 3k bigport head and use a 4k head, you won't be able to get the low compression you require to reliably turbo such a motor, and a 4k head is newer and likely to be in better nick so you have to spend less reconditioning it, and the metal will be stronger  acl don't do dished pistons as they were japanese import motors, not australian made  there ARE motorbike forgies which can be made to fit a K motor. what they're from however, I have no idea. get the piston specs you need from the 3k/4k listing in the acl book and start trawling motorcycle piston catalogs Quote

Super Jamie Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 never checked other aftermarket manufacturers. when my engine machine shop couldn't work out my compression properly, they wanted to dome-grind the tops of my flat pistons down, so apparently that can be done but it's expensive. and you'd destroy your quench area which would suck Quote
Super Jamie Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 and besides, how much boost do you want to run? stock pistons will take 6psi happily, 8psi for short periods of time, and 10psi kills them fairly quick Quote
fourwheeldemon Posted January 11, 2005 Author Report Posted January 11, 2005 hey guys yeah i was thining of running 6 psi onlow boost then bout 12 psi on high, so i was trying to find out what i shoud do for some cheap internals (i know internals arent cheap but I'm 16 and cheap is my main priority so i wouldnt mind using 2nd hand ones if u or anyone u know have any and ill just get the rings redone? from pat Quote

Redwarf Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 (edited) Pat, take it from someone who's been around a bit. You don't need a turbo. Not if you're 16 and it's your first car. God this sounds condescending, but in all honesty, you'd be a hell of a lot better off if you built a neat solid 4K. You wouldn't have issue of lunching pistons, using second hand parts (definitely NOT recommended), and you would have a good solid car to drive that wouldn't give you any grief. Super Jamie Posted January 16, 2005 Report Posted January 16, 2005 couldn't find any info except to say they're the same bore and have the same number of rings and ring size as a 4k, and someone who thought 1G has a 20mm wrist pin as opposed to 18mm 4k. if you could find a catalog with pistons or rod bearings for a cressida or mark ii you could confirm  and i agree with rob, learner drivers and turbos aren't a good mix  besides which, if you want to run 12psi into a K motor, it's not going to be cheap. if i were you, i'd build a tough 5k, we'll help you out with the specifics of it. you won't beat anything really high powered, but if my little restricted 4k can keep up pretty well with commodores and wrxs, a nicely build 5k would garner a bit of respect, considering what you can do with a carbed 1.5L engine based on a 40 yearold design Quote
Mr Revhead[RL] Posted January 17, 2005 Report Posted January 17, 2005 ok just confirmed it, 1g-gze pistons fit 4ks. the bore is the same and so is the rod length etc. mate of mine (guy who built the 2jzgte levins) has dummy assembled one. BUT it was a trail fit and meausre... so you will stell need to check a coupla things. however he is very sure it will work. so that gives you strong rods and pistons suitable for turboing Quote
