20V is the short name for SR20VE, The V isn't the number of valves. The only other 5 valve head I've heard of on a car are on an old Ferarri V12 from the 80's. Most of the other 20V motors I've heard of and researched ended up being 5 cylinder 4 valve motors.

There are a bunch of VW/Audi 5-valve engines too, hell they've even got a 30-valve V6. Take a look at the engines in the late 90s A3, A4, Passat and Golfs to see them.

I just did:

"This engine is commonly known as the SR20VE '20V'. Although, in automotive terms, '20V' would normally be interpreted as having twenty valves, this is incorrect. The name '20V' is the name of the trim level of the Nissan Primera that it is found in. "

but trust me this is a good thing, all other things considered a 5V engine is inferior to a 4V.

Interesting, just had a look at those Audi's, seem like an interesting engine.

I don't agree that that a 5 valve engine is an inferior engine, it's just a different approach that costs more to manufacture for negligible power gains in factory terms, hence they never got fully developed. The more valves you have the smaller the valve and the less spring tension you need to seal it properly at high rpm and boost. Which means more power :(

The fastest 1.6L turbo FWD drag car in Australia has a 20V blacktop head, and it keeps up with 2.2L vtec 4 valve motors, given the 600cc difference, I think the word inferior - "Of low or lower quality" is a little bit of a hike.

I stand corrected, but like you say, they are a good thing (and there's a turbo version...)

I should be more specific, I was refering to in the use of atmo engines. Theres a very good reason why F1 engines and all the latest motorbike engines (yamaha has dropped the 5V concept) all use 4V and its not as simple as you think. But as a rough guide the lower spring tension and increased theoretical airflow leads to heavily shrouded valves, bad combustion chamber shape, bad port shape, bad piston shape, etc..

But lets not clutter this thread if you want to know more I can start a new topic.

Hey I have heard people talking about Ford duratec engines as being NA monsters in modified form, anyone know anything about it?

they are, the durate gets used in escorts and westfields heaps in the UK, ive got a heap of magazines on them but don't ask me where they are :( a worked N/A ford zetec also makes good power, again, escorts in the UK.

machg: your right, nissan do make a 20v sr, they made them in import primeras and xtrails, they made a turbo one aswell, I'm not sure about excact models tho. There's at least 2 bein built/built on nissansilvia.com

apparently 2 models kick arse and the rest arent really good

I would like to look more into the duratec engine sometime,

anyway theres no 20 valve SR20 but theres a 20V, look at post #18

theres arnt really an option anyway because they are super rare right?

The same laws you're talking about even apply to 4V motor's in high power, boosted drag cars. Past 1500hp, the turbulence is such that you make more power using 2 Valve cross flow heads. At 20,000rpm I'm sure the turbulence is an issue. But for any street car that'll probably never see 10,000rpm what's the point of getting so dramatic in trying to replicate everything to F1 standards, where's the pneumatic valve springs? where's the billet block to get a rod ratio above 2? Stand off injectors on a street car :(

At the end of the day you need to take thing's as they are rather than in a theoretical nightmare of over evaluation. If a motor makes good power and puts a smile on your face, its all good :o

simple theory, I like it

the problem is I ditched my 20V build to go for what I think is a better head that is a 4V, so if it just applies in higher revs and not in pratise then I will have tears.

is the mazda 3 sp23 motor a duratec?

Technically the other way around. Modern Duratec 4s are all Mazda engines, from the MZR family I think. Older 8V Duratecs were based off the Kent.

On the other hand, the Duratec V6s are made by Ford, and Mazda re-badges them as AJ and MZI (with some changes, such as VVTi etc). Interesting fact, the 3.5L MZI/Duratec 35/Cyclone will most likely be appearing in the new Falcon in 2010.

 I think this is the thread you are talking about' count the valves in the second picture......

vvl- 16 valve head.......
