Howdy everybody,

was just thinkin of possible engine conversions for the 25. the idea of the toyota Hilux 22r (2.4lt 4cyl) motor popped up as we have a hilux in the shed.

just wanting to kno IF it could be done or if its been done before.

I think i saw 1 in a 25 on an overseas corolla site.

and most of all would it be legal, don't want the po-po on me :nervous:

If I understand correctly your in SA. Therefore I am pretty sure it isn't legal. Your going from a 1.2L (correct?) to a 2.4L. You would have to check with an engineer (think theres a few in the Prospect area), but that would be my understanding. If it was legal you would have to do some serious mods to handling (ie. brakes, suspension etc).

Why not see if you can get a 2TG or a 3TC. Sleeka Spares (sp?) in Pooraka (I think?) should be able to help you out. You have a better chance of getting a stock T series motor engineered and through rego than a 22R in my opinion.

A little tired so bare with me :nervous:

22r's definitely arnt performance engines, Have a bit of torque but thats about it, Not worth the effort in my books.

2TG/3TG hybrid gets my vote.

yeah just seein if anybody had done that conversion.

I kno its not a performance motor. but itd be interesting to see how one fits in a 25 bay tho.

I'm puttin in a 4k next weekend ($50 bargin) so i'll see how it goes and then see if i wanna go further with it.

when i decide to get a new runabout i might bung one in and see if i can't kill myself in it. haha

Would the 22R be to big for the KE25 engine bay being mindful of the radiator clearance and brake booster?

Just thinking that it might even be easier to find a 7K engine in SA, as you just may be able to change the engine numbers around than.

yeah a guy that previously owned my rolla has another 25 with a 7k TURBO running garret and daw thru sidedraught in it but it was too much hassle to register a 25 with a 7k legaly so its registered as a 5k. i think he just sold it for $3,000 if i had the money id buy it but a 1st yr apprentice wage isnt that generous. but for 3 grand got u the car, spare 5k setup for turbo, fresh lsd and a shed full of parts. i kno i'll be kickin myself for not gettin it.

HAZZZA, i finally found a photo. this pics from the USof A I think as the master cylinder is on the LH side. but still it looks like it fits without havign to mod the firewall or radiator. PLUS a turbo whacked on for good luck. still to much work for a daily driver, anyways a turbo 3k on the way.

ryan, just remember the above pick is a LH drive ke2#

which means ur exhaust side clearances will be no dramas, but ull come across brake master, and also clutch cylinder (once fitted) clearance issues.

be a relativly easi conversion, probably same amount of work to mount a 4AGE, but with more capacity.

the world is your oyster if your keen enough and ready to put in the time and money.

cheers, scott

was just mainly wondering if anybody on here had done it before or if it could be done. yeah most of all it comes done to time and money as scott said, scott being the example of stickin big things in little places (engines and engine bays). but it was only an idea when i first got the rolla to stick one in but for now toying round with turbos is enough for me. Also being on first year apprentice wages don't help the money side of owning 2 cars.

The yanks are pretty keen on the 22r's, they must have a heap of them or something. Check out these guys:

LC Engineering

They do nothing but build crazy 22r's.

I had a read, they are reasonably in square and should be a nice torquey motor in theory. Biggest downside I can see to the motor is the breathing limitation of the head.

But, cheap common and easy motor, and they have plenty of torque stock.

Do it, it would be nice to something different from the staple donks.
