Doogs Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Hi, I have been looking at buying a Ke20, but it is auto and i would like a manual one. I am thinking that if i bought it i would convert it to manual, but do not know how legal this is. I assume it needs to be checked/certified? I have had a look on the vicroads site and can not see anything. Does anyone know the legal process i would need to go through, and if it can be legally done ? (or if i just need to do it by stealth and not tell them) :D Help much apreciated, Dougal Quote
4ages Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Just go to your local transport office ask them, but everyone I know that have done the same that you are looking into just went and did it then got the mod tagged/certified and change the vehicle detail at said transport office and insurance. That would be suffice, but you aren't in the same state. So go and ask. Quote
Medicine_Man Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Just don't do a dodgy conversion, If everything works as it should then it will be fine.. Quote
Trev Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 There is no legal issues, You only need to mod it when going from manual to auto, I dunno how that works tho. Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Just get an engineer to issue a blue plate. Costs roughly 80 dollars if you did a good job of it. In QLD anyhow. Quote
Doogs Posted March 25, 2008 Author Report Posted March 25, 2008 Thanks guys, Will keep this in mind. Quote
kickn5k Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 (edited) I find it hard to see why a g/box change that came out of same car needs to be checked. The only time an engineers on a swap like that is needed is when it did not come with the car orig or the crossmember has been modified. But i will check with a mate of mine tonight he works at vicroads he will know. At worst you may just need ring vicroads and tell them you have changed to a manual. stu. Because the build plate on the car tells the police what the car is and what it should have in it, when they don't match what they see its trouble. ie engine g/box and seating capacity Quote
webers4x48 Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 (edited) Many many moons ago I replaced the old toyo-glide for a 5 speed (out of a ke55) in my ke 20. I had no issues with Vicroads or the police (who quite frequently pulled me up back then) about the conversion. I even left the toyo-glide badge on the boot lid. As long as you use the pedal box from a manual car there are no real problems. The crossmembers are usually mounted in the same spot. At least for a ke 20. I'm not sure about the 30. Oh and another thing, the gear lever boot must be sealed as to not let any gases into the cabin. I used the original boot and an after market boot on top. LB Edited March 27, 2008 by webers4x48 Quote
Clown Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 A mate of mine went from auto to manual and just told vicroads that he'd done the conversion and it was ok. Nothing was cut or modified and it was all factory gear. Its usually when its not factory and things need to be cut then its an issue. Quote
Doogs Posted March 27, 2008 Author Report Posted March 27, 2008 I was just unsure and wanted to check. Anyway, its not a problem as the car i was looking at turns out to not be a go-er after all. The search goes on... :hmm: Quote
philba Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Because the build plate on the car tells the police what the car is and what it should have in it, when they don't match what they see its trouble. ie engine g/box and seating capacity The Victorian Police Force (or should that be farce?) don't know how to read those plates. Half of them wouldn't know the difference between a K engine and a 350 chev Quote

Half of them wouldn't know the difference between a K engine and a 350 chev lol a friend of mine had to pop the bonnet on his XR4 and let the cop search for the turbo just to convince him it wasn't there. 78_7kRolla Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Haha! Not the first time it has happened either. Many of these new euro/jap FWD turbo hotties have massive plastic engine covers and heats shields making the turbo almost non-existent to somebody who doesn't know their stuff too well. (eg. most coppers) Quote
