Uncaptive springs = BAD

Hopefully you don't have any issues with hitting potholes and losing control due to the dampers not working :POSTPICS!:

Haydo that looks sweet! I'd leave the back as is tho, looks mad..

I'll have to get u round when I need help :POSTPICS!:

I agree with Scott too, the 12s are mad, chuck some new B80 155/80s with 1 inch whitewalls.

Guess we'll see what these 14s look like then, you keeping the centre caps on?

Cheers, Ben.

yeh, those springs will be popping off their seats nice and easy! haha.

they're superlows off a KE20 aren't they?

I'll go a swaybar if we can get a good discount. I was thinking about it a bit more Scotty, the leaf wouldn't actuall operate as a swaybar, it depends if its fixed at the centre of the leaf or not? (haven't looked)

The reason they have them Haydo is because in 1967 when they started building these things, leaf springs were the technology they knew and used the most. It does the same job as a compression spring, but thats about it. With the dual coil/leaf setup they can also get a progressive spring rate effect, something that probably wasn't too common back then.

The Datsun 1000 also has a similar front end, except I think they might be a crude double wishbone setup. (?)

I can tell you from personal experience that the leaf does have a swaybar effect. :hmm: Once the car leans on it and the leaf flattens out on one side (suspension arm level), it limits further body roll.

Removing the leaf and fitting cut ke20 coils (still captive) makes for the front end having less initial body roll, but it will roll a hell of a lot further when the suspension is loaded up in a corner. I found that under extreme cornering, like ripping into a tight roundabout, you could lift the inside back tyre off the ground. Good for single wheelers out of corners, but not for traction.

Adding a Whiteline front bar, and 185/60r13 A539s transformed the handling of my ke15. I've been running without the front leaves for about 5 years with no hassles.

The problem with radically lowering a car is it screws with the suspension geometry. Ideally your front arms should be parallel to the ground or higher, otherwise you should add RCA's.

hey all thanks for the comments, ;)

oh ye and scott i would prob be keen for a swaybar ay so ye ill try an get on to that, and na it dosnt bounce around atall bieng so stiff ay its sweet and theres f@$k all body roll, because the shockers arnt fully compressed i think theres like a couple cm of give so there still helping out a little bit hah,

ye i will probably leave the 12"s on haha i don't mind them atall,

and no the springs are custom ye thats right haha custom ke11 super low auroras, i think thats how you spell it.... and no the leaf isnt fixed in the middle, i can see how it could work as a sway bar but the arms kinda do that aswell cuz there bolted to the botttom of the shockers an that ye i dunno hah,

but ye thanks for the interesting facts philbey i thought that was prob the reason for the leaf,

and to felix yes that sounds very true, but i can't really go that fast around corners atm cuz when i hit a bump going quick cornering it scrapes haha so i should be okay hopefully, ill just cruze her nice like a granny.... :hmm: but i still might have to raise that back a bit just so i can atually go places hahah

cheers haydo
