Ae82 corolla sedan.

Single over head cam 8 valve carby engine, Cast block and alloy head, Electronic distributor. 75hp (67kW) at 4800 rpm. 85ft·lbf (115N·m) at 2800 rpm.

You can drop in a 4AFC engine which is A narrow-valve (22.3°) DOHC 4-valve carb version, the 4A-F, was produced from 1987 through 1990. Output was 90 hp at 6000 rpm and 95 ft·lbf (128 N·m) at 3600 rpm. Bolt in job and carby too so not much wiring at all and its such a better engine.

thanks for the lightning reply ae70. pretty much what I needed and the engine conversion sounds good. any hassles from NSW RTA? maybe I should add that I have been working on cars for the last 45 years but have never had the pleasure of gutting a corolla

I don't think the 4ac is worth fixing. Boat anchor is all i seem them good for. GO the 4afc option for a cheap simple fix that has more power and torque. HUGE difference from a 4ac.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_A_engine#4A-C

Toyota A series engines. Any 4a engine will go where another 4a was. So you can replace your 4ac with a 20v 4age if you wish.

Engine number change only, Same series engine, same capacity. Every single 4A has a similar engine number eg a 4ac would have 4A385733 and a 4AGZE would have 4A486936. 4AGZE will need mod plating as its supercharged.

Early series 1 ae82's had a black grille and short front indicators but the later model series 2 had a colour coded grille and longer front indicators. Thats with the hatch and seca model, Not 100% about the sedans but i think they are the same.

Rear Garnish on bootlid was also on early (s1) CS-X version. :y:

Also other upgrades would be a Tacho Dash from CS-X and Digital clock in dashpad. :hmm:

The wiring is there ready to be used, just plug it in and away you go. :jamie:

Wow!!! the info on this forum is amazing. Thanks all. I have another q? What is the wheel offset on the AE82 Corolla please. Oh, and what offset can I get away with doing no suspension mods? I am guessing 4 x 114.3 and 55 offset. we'll see how wrong I am.

And Dunadan, are you referring to the two plastic bits at the end of the license plate or the two that go to the tail lights?

Just found a good 4AFC for $275. Is that a good price and is there any tricks or clues to fitting it ie mounts, clutch anything at all so I don't stuff it up. Thanks

7shades, I am a bit late with this reply but could not resist. I would come to Cairns to get one of your "dime a dozen" 4AFC motors but it would cost me around $800 in fuel and another $800 in motel and food cost for the 6 day 5000+ kilometre round trip. Not that driving up and down the east coast of Australia would not be fun. Wet a couple of lines on the way. Barbequed fish is ok.

thanks for the info, solved a little problem. now I can get rid of the 13 inch razor blades I am using for tyres and slip a set of 14 or 15 inch Honda rims on the old girl

Well if all you're after is a fishing trip, jump on a plane... flights are cheap as chips and I got a tinnie and plenty of gear you can borrow :hmm:

Yup 4x100.

I'm running 15x6 +40 rims and they don't scrub on anything.

The only tricky bit with the 4afc is the emissions system, Like all the vacuum lines, Its just because there is alot of them but still its worth it over a 4ac. 4af engines can pick up cam noises if they arnt looked after properly, Just a tick at idle and high rpm. Mine took a good thrashing and was just the noise is there if you listen for it. $275 is ok. I'm pretty sure they have the same box as the 4ac manual box.
