Teddy Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 Hey all Ok, so ive got another weird idea, lets see how QLD transport likes this one :doublebird: Ok, my idea is this. To what i know, the coldest air (when a vehicle is moving) - flows up over the bonnet, and spirals/curls around the bottom of the front windscreen. (top pic) Is it legal if you cut a hole large enough to fit a medium sized pod filter through the top of the fire wall - so that its in the area where the air is sucked in from the outside and into the cabin / where the mechanism is for the window washers (bottom pic) This way you can have a really short intake pipe, and it would be away from the hot exhaust :P Quote
irokin Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 believe it or not this is what some NASCAR teams do (or used to do). Aft of the bonnet and forward of the windscreen is a high pressure area. Now, POD filters, unless enclosed in a box, are most certainly illegal. Cutting the firewall, another thing I wouldnt be jumping into. Cutting, beating, grinding etc etc of the firewall can result in your car being black listed (for suspected VIN tampering) which in turn means you'll never register that car again, ever. You can risk it and providing your cars never stolen etc etc you should be right. Some cars (can't think of any off the top of my head) Have plates you can take off to clean out the vents and Ive seen at least one rotary guy doing the exact thing your suggesting here :doublebird: Quote
Teddy Posted December 20, 2004 Author Report Posted December 20, 2004 :doublebird: I'm sure i could fabricate some stock looking vents which go into the engine bay from that area - one on both sides that can be removed for...cleaning purposes :P Quote
Xany Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 i have the cleaning vents that irokin is talking about..... this is not my engine bay, however you can see the black plates that cover the vents..... Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 21, 2004 Report Posted December 21, 2004 this has laughingly been referred to as the cheap way to transplant a fwd 4age into a rwd corolla, the throttle body faces back towards the firewall so you just use the plenum (that's the bit where the wiper arms are on a ke3x) to stick your air filter into, even better on a ke2x which has little raised grilles and probably sucks air in there anyway Quote
demuire Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Darn it, why didn't someone point me to this idea when I did my transplant  Quote
mumblezzz Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 I saw a similar setup actually being used on an MX5 at a recent track day. It re-routed the intake piping up through the firewall into the vents below the windscreen to take advatage of the high pressure area there. Didn't find out if it made any noticable gains but it probably helps a little bit. Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 considering 70mph of speed equates about 0.1psi of additional intake pressure, i'd say it makes bugger all difference. look at most early factory efi setups like camiras and exas, if you were really cheap you could just run a pipe in a u-bend from the firewall-facing throttle body and it would still work fine Quote
Teddy Posted December 22, 2004 Author Report Posted December 22, 2004 yeah, only reason i suggested it is because the air cleaner area is so close to the fire wall (on my car), and running a big pipe from the front compaired to a 30 cm pipe to the fire wall... Quote
demuire Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 if you were really cheap you could just run a pipe in a u-bend from the firewall-facing throttle body and it would still work fine Umm... When was the last time you had a look at a FWD throttle body? It would end up like... 50mm from the firewall, there'd hardly even be any space to put a bend in! Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 (edited) if you've ever seen the engine bay of an exa, that's plenty of room exas suck Edited December 22, 2004 by Super Jamie Quote
Teddy Posted December 22, 2004 Author Report Posted December 22, 2004 Wow jamie, sure your parents didnt bring you up in a datsun? Quote
Super Jamie Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 no my friend sam has an exa, unregistered but he doesnt bother with details like that. its actually quite quick feeling to drive in because its a rattly old shitbox, even though it's only a 15(?) second car. its got these pipes and shit all over the engine bay, the intake tract crosses side to side twice it's so stupid. apparently you can get 15kw or something and a tough sounding idle just from bypassing all that shit this post was brought to you by jim beam, now in 440ml cans on special at coles for 55 bucks a carton, buy two like me and my mate nick did!!!
