corolln Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 hey.. i want to spray my head black is it as simple as removing the head painting it n putting it back on.. i know i need to use a certain type of paint etc.. removing the head - is it just taking out the two bolt on the top of the head at either end?? I'm very new to cars but I'm getting along.. :P cheers Quote
Des Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 You will need to use high temp engine enamel paint. Since your removing the head you will need to get another head gasket. If the engine is old it might be worth getting the valve stem seals replaced, You will need to get the head surfaced so its dead flat to put back on. You would probably spend $30 on paint and $30 for a new head gasket, Around $60 for the head to be surfaced and $90 for the valve stem seals to be done. Quote
canna Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 hey. for a start you will need heat proof paint. those 2 bolts are for the rocker cover. then under the rocker cover there are 10 bolts for the head. you will all so need new gaskets. as well as doing the head bolts up in sequence. I'm not sure about the timing if youl mess it up or not. as long as you don't touch the push rods Quote
WinKE55 Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Try Powder Coating. Might work a little better, though depends if you want the head one colour, or to have a design on it like some show cars do. Quote
philbey Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 i have a feeling you mean the rocker cover anyway? Not the actual head. You can get head gaskets off ebay for 6 bucks every now and then. Quote

fusion Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 Get it powder coated I say :P A rally mate got his EFI manifold setup powder coated to make it look like standard and it only costed him $40. It look nice and stock and no blemishes. Looked like and awesome job from the state he sent it in for only $40 :jamie: Quote

bruce Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 (edited) The rocker cover could also be polished nice and shiny; suits old school cars. Edited February 25, 2008 by bruce Quote
corolln Posted February 25, 2008 Author Report Posted February 25, 2008 polishing?? does this need to be done professionaly? whats the way to go here.. don't really want to spend alot of money, less is best :P just after a good result cheers Quote
bruce Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 A polishing kit can be bought at hardware stores like K&D, for around $30 I think. The kit includes two polishing wheels (coarse and soft), that can be easily fitted to a regular power drill, and buffing compound. Quote
corolln Posted February 25, 2008 Author Report Posted February 25, 2008 cheers mate a reakon ill give that a go... cheers for the help and info guys cheers cam Quote
philbey Posted February 25, 2008 Report Posted February 25, 2008 philbey, i think your right :P haha, i wish my girlfriend thought that way... Cam, if you want to polish your rocker cover, get a tube of Autosol Metal Polish at near any hardware store. Gold and black toothpaste like packaging. Its pricey but lasts ages and does a killer job. Just requires some elbow grease. Also, I have used this stuff with great results on Taillights! Quote
