Doogs Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 (edited) Hey all, I am looking at building a warm 5k in the near future to go into a Ke15/17/20/25 (whichever i end up finding). I have as good as planned what i will be doing to it (heads, cam etc) but have decided to have a look at other options as well, and find out what others are doing/have done. I am interested to see what others are doing/have done in the way of blocks, what head + work, cam, bottom end mods etc. So; What k motor do you have under your bonnet, and with what (if any) mods ? What head are you using, (and what has been done to it) ? What other work has been done to the engine, and to what specs ? (cams, parts etc) Sorry about all the questions, but i figured it would be good to see what else is/has been done, and what combination of parts are being used. By the way, i have read the faq article on 'how to build a tuff k motor' a number of times, but figured it would be good to get an idea of how others have done it and a few more opinions. Thanks in advance, Dougal Edited February 12, 2008 by Rad Rolla Quote
KE555k Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Hey mate, I'll give you info on my 5k. By the way. I bought it like this, and I'm almost finished putting it into my ke55 4dr, so i havent actually driven it yet, but here's what is done to it anyway. -Head port and polish -Duralite Pistons -Fully balanced bottom end (crank, conrods etc.) -Electronic Distributor -10mm Stainless Steel Custom Leads -Dual 40mm DCOE weber carburettors (Just Been Reco'd.) and soon to have ram tubes/socks. -3 core radiator -Thermo Fan -Extractors -One-piece Unknown size exhaust 2inch-ish? - A cam that is 1/3 bigger than an a9x torana race cam? anyone got info on that? Thats all i can remember for now? Hope that was what you were after? Nathan. Quote
toy74 Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 i just looked at http://www.toysport.com/technical%20inform..._tech_notes.htm What a great read. Gives you a prety good insite about 4ag's and specs on a few set ups. TONES Quote
Doogs Posted February 12, 2008 Author Report Posted February 12, 2008 Cheers guys, KE555k, sounds like a fun car you have got there ! :y: (especially with that cam) I have been told before that duralites are good pistons, do you know where they can be sourced from + a rough cost ? Thanks, Dougal Quote
harun Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Hypertech makes the duralite pistons i think? Correct me if I'm wrong. I have currently sent my 3K to the machiners: Mods are as follows: Bottom End - 1.Balance Crank, Crank sprocket, Conrods, Pistons, Flywheel and Clutch. 2.Block Rebored and Honed 60 thou over. 3.Hypertech Duralite pistons and rings to match. 4.Shimmed oil pump. 5.Block refaced and head shaved to achieve 10:1 compression. 6.Heavy Duty Clutch Head - 3K Bigport, 1.Match ported and polished to exact measurment of intake and exhaust gasket. 2.Bigger Valves.Custom Valve seats to match. 3.4K stems and retainers. 4.Heavy Duty Valve springs. Others - 1.Cam regrind. 2.Distrubuter rebrushed and recurved accourding to cam specs and how much ron of fuel that will be used. 3.Custom leads. 4.Bosch Gt40R Coil. Intake & Exhaust. SU HS2 twin carbs. 2 inch manderel bent extractors with exhaust wrap. Thats about. Quote
KE555k Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Yeah it should definitely be quite fun. I was told that i should get my distributor re-graphed? anyone know what that involves? or a price maybe? Quote
harun Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 don't know what they really do however mine cost $160. Quote

I am especially interested in the costing of your head work. I have decided that this will be where i put most of my money into, because it is where i can get the most gains. I am looking at getting a port+polish job and hopefully bigger valves with seats to suit. I need to look into this a little more though, because I have heard that in a 5k head there is not space for this. This is why i am interested in the different combos people have, incase i need to run a worked 4k head on a 5k block. (or something similar) What combos do the rest of you have ? Cheers Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 4k (or 3k) head on 5k bottom end = low compression, ie suitable for forged induction only!! :y: Under my bonnet.....hehe Quote
harun Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 The head will be the most expensive in order to benefit the engine. 1. Match porting - $500 2. Bigger Valves - $330 (I think they needed to be custom made to fit the head, not very sure) 3. Heavy Duty Valve Springs between $200 - $300 Quote
harun Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 Taz you boost junkie!! Why don't you buy a car that comes with a turbo out of factory and leave the poor K engine NA and alone. HAHAHA Kidding mate, looks like an awsome setup there.love the the chrome and blue colour combo. Quote

(hopefully i can get springs cheaper than that though) Quote
coln72 Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 all you guys spending big bucks on pistons, balancing etc :y: My 5k ran standard bottom end and head, 3kb carbs and manifold, 4 into 1 extractors and a 2" zorst. Ran a thermo fan, electric fuel pump and a self modded dizzy Cam was reground to a Wade 169(?) spec. This would easily rev to 8000rpm and did so for years and was extremely competitive in club events. This is why I question buying aftermarket pistons...... Quote
