philbey Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Not good for the 930 workers. The government does nothing to assist local manufacturing hence the coming closure of the Geelong Ford plant. These low import taxes/charges has really made it hard for the locals. Discuss. True low taxes and removal of tarriffs have made it harder. But look what we get; a better selection of better cars. The Aussie car makers have relied on a sentimental market for years, and it bit them in the arse. Just like Geelong, there will be a ruckus about the government not fixing it or helping them out, but its bullshit - they have done plenty to help and tried forking out money to no avail. At the end of the day, its no use paying to patch up a sinking ship. And while it does suck for the now unemployed workers, keep in mind that we are in the middle of record low unemployment in this country, and they are probably all getting a solid 6 months of pay to walk out with... yellow_keto Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I think they should let their test track become usable to the public, considering i live down the road ;) Quote
Trev Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I don't think anyone will beat the sales of toyota and honda has to make robots, planes and lawnmowers to get some sales so they are outta the question. Quote

Des Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I work for a company that has extremely close ties with Mitsubishi (MMAL) and it is a shit outcome for the workers and everyone in general. But before anyone bitches about the 380 being a shit car and that's the reason why it closed down, just a quick question, have you ever driven one????? don't go by the mentality that "it's a Mitsubishi and i'd never drive one of those, (unless it's an EVO)". if you love cars in general, don't be a sheep and just repeat what other people say, use your own brain and test it for yourself. I was given one to drive for a week, absolutely thrashed it and it was fantastic. I'm not just saying this because of where I work, my past cars were a 74 Lancer, 80 Celica, 2000 WRX and now a 76 Corolla, have been around and driven Holden and Fords as well. You get good and bad in all makes, and we all have our favourites. Too late i bitched, I have driven one when RACQ bought it to see if it would be a decent fleet car, Notice they only bought 1, Not the worst car but certainly not the best, Would rather my ae82 twincam but thats me. teza40 Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 HI 2 All,yes it is very sad news. I myself worked at the tonsley park plant from 1985 to 1994,i saw the end of the sigma and the colt, the arrival of the magna. In the early 90`s little would most people know or realise mitsubishi made the tooling dies for the wide body camry (mainly the outer body panel dies). My father worked in the same plant when it was the mighty chrysler australia, and i must conceed the two companies came to the same crushing end mainly because of the wrong choice for the australian public market. Tho thats no reflection that the vehicle was or is a piece of shite.the cm valiant was also long in the tooth cosmetic upgrade, but fuel prices had a lot to do with its demise also.it was mentioned have you driven the 380 or any mitsubishi product, well yes i havein 1992 i was given the then current magna to take home from the factory and test drive with the family (sales pitch,so they were already stuggling a bit i guess then). Now i am not and never will be a huge fan of front wheel drive cars (but each to their own),this magna was the four cylinder model, well appointed for its time and a real farrkin pleasure to drive. i have driven a front wheel drive car at its most rawest form,a mini moke ( a trailer body with an engine up front as far as I'm concerned) and toyota seca 92 hatch (girlfriends car). I believe if mitsubishi had continued to make rear wheel drive mid too large sized vehicles the ywould have had a better chance of survival. I myself blame the government (for letting cheap arse imports into this country) and yes global economy and the ordinary joe`s inubility to afford (because of low income etc etc) vehicles of today. a funny memory i have from days gone by,when i met my now ex wife, her father said to me"do you work",my reply was yes i work for mitsubishi motors at tonsley park.To which he replied "well you got it half right" he said you work for the japs but at least you have a job, I wish those 930 or so people that will lose their job and long term livley hood all the best, because it is not that easy for some to just go out and get something better.Adealide is and has always relied on its car industry, many spin off supply companies will also have a down turn now.like teneco at lonsdale etc. Yes i live in Queensland and yes i was was born and raised in Adelaide, tis a sad year and a loss of a decent motor company. Cheers Teza Quote
