Transfer Of Rego Between States?

Hey all,

 

I am considering buying a car based in adelaide and want to know what

is involved in getting it registered in vic, and what it might cost.

 

I have looked on the vicroads/sa equivelent site but could not find a definitive answer.

 

The car i am buying looks like it will run out of rego by the time i would possibly

take delivery.

 

I assume that if it were to run out of sa reg, i would have to get a vic rwc and then

register it under my name here. Is this so?

 

If it still had sa reg would i still need a rwc to get it vic registered ?

 

Anyone done this before/know what it may cost ?

Ok, I recently purchased my Hilux from Sydney and drove it back home to Tassie and went through a similar thought process........

 

Here's what I know from my (very limited) experience......

 

If the car your buying has rego, You have to hand in the plates as you re-register the car, it will have to go over the pits and get inspected for a roadworthy cert BEFORE you can re-register it, there is no straight swap of rego like I thought there would be.......

 

If it doesn't have rego, You'll have to get a permit to drive an unregistered vehicle ($50ish), then put it over the pits to get it rego'd

 

It cost me $60 to get it fully inspected, then $250ish for 6 months rego, I assume you'll be looking at a similar cost. (barring anything the car fails on)

 

I hope this answers your questions, but please bear in mind that this is my experience from Tassie, the rules/costs/methods may vary between different states......... Happy buying! :hmm:

If the vehicle is to be registered in a different name from the interstate registration the following requirements need to be met:

 

make an appointment for a vehicle inspection (if required)

obtain a roadworthy certificate issued no more than 30 days prior to your appointment (not required for trailers under 4.5 tonnes GVM)

provide evidence of identity (see below) and Victorian residency

provide evidence of ownership of the vehicle (a receipt/contract of sale identifying the vehicle by engine number and/or VIN showing the full name and address of the previous and new operator)

provide evidence of origin (previous registration certificate or registration number on ownership receipt)

 

Motor vehicle duty is payable.

I will bear this in mind when looking at this vehicle.

 

Kangaroosa, I now do remember seeing that page on the vicroads

site, i was just unsure on whether i would need to get an inspection done.

 

Looks like i will have to pay for an inspection as well, though i might ring

them to clarify.

website. I can not see anything that says you can get a permit to drive a vehicle

between states, is this the case ?

there is a general agreement between all the states on this where you can, for instance, buy your unregistered vehicle in Adelaide, get the UVP in Adelaide/SA and it will be honoured if you get pulled up in Victoria somewhere on the ride home.

Interstate Use

Unregistered vehicle permits are generally issued for use in Victoria. However, under reciprocal arrangements, permits issued for interstate travel, eg. to go to a place of registration, are recognised by interstate authorities.

 

Permits do not need to be issued when the origin of a trip is in another jurisdiction, except in cases where another jurisdiction requests a permit to be issued.

You will have to gt a vic roady, then take the car to vicroads and they can rego it for you, will have to be all new rego as they wll not swap it over, make sure you get proof of purchase, sa may have transfer papers of some sort, nsw has i bit on the back of the rego papers that you can use as a receipt.

 

Then when the new reg is on it you can send some shit off to sa transport saying that you bought it and the reg has been canceled and they will send you a cheque for the left over reg, but call them and ask them about it first.
