4ages Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I just thought I would throw a possible thread in the air. Wheel offsets and how they may vary, in the situation of suspension setup, rolla model or other variants. Like mine for instance is I have a AE82 hatch(originally single cam) now twincam, and I am about to throw coil over suspension under it. I know that the normal offset is 40 but, how much do these thinge effect the offset if at all? Quote
adam-__- Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 (edited) The offset is all in the wheels. How much extra/less track the suspension components give is a different story. Edited January 26, 2008 by adam-__- Quote
Des Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Wheel offset has a major play in suspension handling, Unsprung weight is a huge thing too. More positive offset = Flat fwd style, less track. Less positive offset to Negative offset = Rwd style, generally more track, wider wheel choice. You will need to find what suits you best. Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Coilovers wont widen your track, except if you run it lower, but they wont be outside the normal range of motion that they followed on compression. Quote
4ages Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 That all said, I shouldn't need to change tthe offset of my wheels just because of the coilovers? I forgot to add that I was worried about the scrubbing and unwanted stuff like that. Coz at the moment where it sits Mat, Brad and Trev know this one the front wheels rub on the inside just reversing with full lock. So I think thats the angle I was looking at.... Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Coilovers are generally a slimmer diameter than a standard strut, and can add strut clearance on the back space of the wheel, so that shouldn't rub. If you scrub at full lock it wouldn't effectively cause any problems while driving. You will never achieve full lock going forwards except at very low speeds, and since its a fwd, you wont be needing any opposite lock. Id be more worried about getting a decent spring rate and damper combination. Have you spoken to Brian Herriman at Rocklea Mechanical yet? Quote

Not as yet, I was going to go and see him just after i have moved and all the crappy days are over. but it's deffinately going to happen. Quote

LittleRedSpirit Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 An offset faq would be great, with pictures and diagrams. Has been asked for a few times before and nothing has happened, should also combine height. 13" 14" etc and width. Probably will never happen, so waste your money on trial and error. Unless you get extremely lucky and find someone who can send you pictures of the same rims, tyres on the same vehicle you have and not their opinion. Which is generally worthless.Need to get some definitive faqs happening here guys, I'll measure and take pics. Any one else get off their arse and do more than type. Supposed to be a club...... or is it only for a few and yes I make mistakes too. But this joint needs to get a little more professional, or it becomes a joke. No-one is stopping you compiling one for us all to use. Ill happily pin it if the info is decent. If you feel so strongly... DO IT! Quote
4ages Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 I too, will take photos and post them once I have done the coilovers and thrown a set ov wheels on. Might be an idea to pin this one then clean it up with just the FAQ's when almost sorted or just leave it open for Q and A. Quote

YKE 20T Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 it might be worth going out to a track day at your nearest venue and speaking to someone thats running a similar model in improved production or saloon cars and find what set up they are running. obviously their set up is for the track and yours wouldn't be as radical but theres no reason why you couldn't use this setup as base and that way when your setting your own car up with spring rates and damper combination you will know your taking steps in the right direction. i know theres a few corollas being run in the various classes in the CAMS NSW state championship. LittleRedSpirit Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Just have a look at the QR schedule of events and pick a day when there is going to be ae82s competing. Might need to look at the cams site too and see which class youll find em in. Or you could just do what Ive been saying all along and go and see Brian. Go right to the bloke that dozens of very competitive racers use for suspension tuning. He will know. He got my commodore handling great with only a 350 dollar investment. Quote
