benzo Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 Hi, as some of you may know I have wanted to do a rotor conversion on a KE20 for a while. My ke20 is for sale, and I am buying another. This will be the donor for the rotor conversion. I am going to drop in either a extend port or bridgeport 13B with the intention of 130rwkw, however I am unsure of what gearbox to use. I have been told to use a S4 turbo 5 speed for their strength, but is there another alternative capable of handling this power with alot of abuse, such as a Corona 4 speed (4 speed would be cool lol) or 121 5 speed. Something narrower and shorter than the S4 box would be ideal I suppose. Cheers in advance, Ben. Quote
rolla13bt Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 If having a 4sp doesn't worry you then go for a corona box. they are as strong as a series 4 box and are a fair bit smaller. I know a guy thats been running 12's for 8 or so years with a 13bt 808 and corona box, 4th gear burnouts on the pad and he's never had a prob... Quote
benzo Posted January 24, 2008 Author Report Posted January 24, 2008 Yeh I don't mind having 4 gears, will be like driving a standard one  Cheers Quote
13BT_KE20 Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 if your happy with a 4spd then go the corona, otherwise the S4/5 box is the best option. Or a 12AT cos there smaller (same size as a S2/3 box), but there getting harder to find these days I'm using a S5 box behind my 13BT KE20 :) Quote
Taz_Rx Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 S1/2/3 12a 5 speed are easy to find and will handle the power of a BP/EP if the box is in good condition. I just put a new s1 box in my mazzy on the weekend. They're also a lot cheaper than a s4 box. S4 - $400+ and you need a 9.5" clutch aswell. S1/2/3 - $200+ and use the same clutch. 1 more thing to add with these, they have a similar thing with shifter positions like ke55/ke70. a S1 box will come through the same hole as a rx4/5 box, and then s2/3 are an inch or 2 further back, like putting a ke70 box in a 30/55. :) Quote
benzo Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 Yeah thats one of my concerns. Henry reckons with the S4 box in his 20 he had to modify the shifter housing as the shifter would have been in the back seat unmodified. So the shorterand narrower the box the better. I was thinking Corona 4 spd, S1/2/3 5spd, or 121 5spd. Cheers, Ben. Quote
7shades Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Slightly off topic here, but sorta relevant... indulge me... Do any of you rotorheads know what gearbox a 2 litre 1980 929L runs? I've got two, 4 and 5 speed but they're kinda flogged... I was hoping maybe the equivalent rotor powered model may have a stronger box I could use? Cheers.... Quote
machg Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Slightly off topic, but is a corona box much stronger than a T50? Can you use one with a 4age by bolting an A series bellhousing to the front of it? Quote

Don't know what sort of gearbox the 2L uses, but a rotor box will definitely physically fit in the tunnel, as this model actually had a few factory fitted with rotary engines, was called an RX9 Quote
Taz_Rx Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Slightly off topic, but is a corona box much stronger than a T50? Can you use one with a 4age by bolting an A series bellhousing to the front of it? Yes a W40 (corona 4 speed) is stronger than a T50, you need to make sure the bellhousing is an A series motor to W40/50 though. The bolt pattern for 55,56,57 etc are different. Just for a visual comparison, thats a T50 in the middle and a W50 on the right (same as W40 with an extra cog). Disregard the match box car GB on the left!! :bash: Back in the day (only 5+ years ago) it was very common to find corona 4 speeds in 300+kw rotaries. This has become a bit less common nowadays with more readily available, cheaper s4-5 turbo boxes. And this is somewhat due to the fact that s4/5 boxes aren't the "best you can buy" anymore - Mmmm, RX8 6 speeds (these are actually true 6 speeds as they have NO overdrive)!!!! 7shades..... ....as this model actually had a few factory fitted with rotary engines, was called an RX9...... Shinanigans!!!!! Dude I want whatever drugs your on......either that or the paint stripper is really starting to get to you!! ;) It was the next series of 929's which were also available in coupes which had rotaries in them! This shape... Know as a HB cosmo or Luce. As much I'd like to help you out with the 929 box shades, I really don't know enough to comment. Really an AR.com question. Although a lot of mazda bellhousings, gearsets, ext housing etc are interchangable. For example a rx4 BH fits a 121 box, and also a s4/5 box!!! if the 121 BH fits the 2 litre motor, then theoretically you could use a s4/5 turbo box with the right clutch combo!! :bash: Quote
