yellow_keto Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 I'm pretty sure it should be okay but i don't want to do this and regret it later on. I am doing an engine conversion and need to top up the oil in my T50 gearbox i have no gearbox oil at home but have shit loads of LSD oil. I also don't have a car to pop down to supercheap to grab some more. Will the LSD oil be fine to use in my gearbox? I know gear oil is practically the same but not sure about LSD cheers Quote
Des Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 Oils ain't oils. LSD oil can be put into a open center and be fine but you cannot put normal gear oil into a LSD, Wont last as long as it should. I'm not sure of the difference between Limslip oil and normal gear oil, I think Limslip oil doesn't break down as easy ? It's not worth the risk, Just get a mate to pick up a 1 litre bottle on their way over. Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 I used engine oil in a gearbox once...it lasted a few weeks, if your intention is to simply drive it to buy some oil and then go home and drain it out and fill it with correct oil, and you have no other way...I'd do it Quote
towe001 Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 Oils ain't oils. And ain't the truth. Like don't go using transmission oil as a replacement for motor oil. You'll only get about a kay from the motor. And thats a long story why  :D Quote
Des Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 The only oils i know that can be put into some thing else safely is if you have red power steering oil you can use red automatic fluid, Same shit different label and price. Quote

Do not put LSD oil in a syncro gearbox. it wont help the syncros. Quote
MRMOPARMAN Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 ive done it a few times. for a short period of time it will be ok, however it will be hard to shift gears. do it to go grab some better oil and thats it. do you have auto trans fluid lying around? that will go much better in the gearbox than diff oil Quote
yellow_keto Posted January 23, 2008 Author Report Posted January 23, 2008 Yeh ill take all your words for it will have to figure out a lift to supercheap I instantly regret my decision of pouring my gearbox oil onto my tyres in attempt to make my 4k rip a skid Quote

I'm pretty sure it's called Dextron 3. Mixing some oils wont hurt it that much, though do becareful as too much can most likely make you regret it. What happened when you put oil on your tyres? Couldn't get any traction at all? Or just really smell? lol Quote
MRMOPARMAN Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 yep dex 3 is the stuff to use, however corolla gearboxes really arent that picky, as long as its auto fluid it will love you for it. I'm currently running mercedes auto fluid in mine. i don't recommend it though as its more than $100 a bottle Quote
PMP020 Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 while on subjetc of oils aint oils. a quick note. K engines will run with LSX90 for hundreds of Kms ;) stinky tho. cheers, scott Quote
Toy-Yoda[RL] Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I instantly regret my decision of pouring my gearbox oil onto my tyres in attempt to make my 4k rip a skid +1 boganistic props son ;) .........Done it many a time before......... Go the mighty smokeshow!!!!! *ahem* Don't hoon kids......... :y: :bash: What happened when you put oil on your tyres? Couldn't get any traction at all? Or just really smell? lol I'm not really sure why, but when you "rip a skid" on a patch of oil, you get lots of smoke, really quickly.......... popular choice of those in heavy, powerless, falcodores and massively underpowered/overtyred Daihatsu Charades *cough* or Evo drivers trying to do nuts........... <-----That ones funny to watch........ the Db king Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 ive got the same oil in engine, box and diff and have been goin for 6 months now, could that be why its sometimes hard to change gears quickly Quote
Corolla1 Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 don't risk it. you would only do this as a last resort run all the correct oils in the right places or it will cause big problems it would be better to drive a car only half full of oil, instead of driving it with the wrong oil. Quote
