I was putting a new carby on my 4k and i dropped a nut down the inlet manifold without realising so i started it and it seams to run fine so i don't think its done any damage i will pull off the manifold tomorrow and get it out luckily its too big to get past the valve it was running for about 10 minutes before i realsied i could hear it rattling in the inlet so i turned it off does any one think it would have caused any damage i don't really care its only a 4k but anyway?

It may be on top of the valve don't run it like it anymore remove the carby first a magnet will work well for the retrival, I do beleive it could pass an inlet valve.

I've had one go through the valve and jam between the piston and head. Engine no spin. Car stop. Pull head off to get out.

Save yourself the bother and pull the manifold off and retreive it before bad stuff happens.

idea:

Get yourself a coat hanger and a fridge magnet. :y:

Cut out a small piece of fridge magnet (say 5c-10c piece) and put a hole in it. Hook it onto the end of the straightened coat hanger, ie just loop it over.

Stick that down the throat of the carby into the mani and have a poke around and see if you can't get the nut.

I know its not a huge issue to get the manifold off (espeacially with extractors) and get it out that way, but if I was you I'd try this first b4 I took it off, and I doubt there's a home in Aus that doesn't have a coat hanger and a fridge magnet spare! 8/

But yeah, don't start the engine again till you get it out! :jamie:

This is where those bendable mechanics magnets come in handy.....lol

I remember a time when i had to go fishing in my sump through the fuel pump hole on the side of the block....i'd taken the fuel pump off to reseal it back onto the block as it was leaking. Clumsy me dropped the nut into the hole *cue kerplonk of nut hitting bottom of sump*.......an oily 15mins later i had the nut in my hand again, all thanks to a bendy mechanics magnet. Saved me having to pull the sump off....lol

But yes make sure you get that out of there, it will most likely cause havoc otherwise.

A bloke I know dropped a nut down a plug hole (Worst Nightmare!!!)

CA18DET as well, so cast iron - no hope of getting a magnet down there without sticking to the bores he reckoned.

For some reason he though he'd try turn it over......

goodnight Irene.

The closest i've come to that is dropping an exhaust manifold nut down the extractors on one of my old cars - had to pull 3/4 of the bloody exhaust off just so that i could up end the pipe. If only the exhaust shop did as i asked with using flanges :jamie: would have been less effort 8/

if you ever manage to drop a nut/bolt down an inlet manifold thats curved, and a straight magnet just wont reach around the bends, obtain an old speaker magnet thats been removed off the speaker not too large, and run it outside/underneath the manifold and listen for the catch. once you've "caught" the object try to run it up the walls of the manifold slowly, then use the straight magnet to reel in your catch. may take a few shots but. if the object is not magnetic, a useful tool is one with a claw that expands when pressed and grabs when released. these are quite long and are flexible too.

Shoulda swapped the leads around and backfired the nut back out

*I don't endorse this*
