7shades Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Shit bum poo crap BASTARDS http://www.dakar.com/indexus.html Quick.... someone pretend to discover oil in Mauritania so the US will all of a sudden decide it is part of the 'axis of evil' and offer military protection for the competitors! I LOVE the Dakar.... such a shame. Quote
ancullen Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Better that they play it safe, but it's still a real shame. Dakar is easily one of the world's best motorsport events. Quote
7shades Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 I understand the liability issues involved (on the organiser's part) for sure. However I would wager a lesser testicle that every single competitor, support team, marshall etc would quite eagerly sign a hefty indemnity waiver and participate. Not that it matters though, jacta alea est. Ooooh and just think of how exciting it would be to watch, what with the possibility of some random ex-soviet military hardware affecting the outcome of the race! Allah be praised, the TV ratings will soar! Quote

LittleRedSpirit Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 (edited) Just give every competitor a side arm. Id definately shoot anyone who attacked me similarly, no worries at all. Wouldnt we all? If its self defence. People die in this event all the time, as 7shades said, they are prepared to die already pretty much, if it comes to it. Freedom of choice. 78_7kRolla Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 i'm not sure laughing is the right thing to do but i did anyway. As for your first post in this thead sbox, well said mate, i see similar things here with the water situation. (like council gardeners watering dead plants and failing to replace them with drought tolerant ones!) This is a good country, but it's f**ked up like many others. Matt. Quote
machg Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Probably not a bad thing, though it is an exciting endurance race. Too many lives lost (both competitors and people that live in those countries). Not all the competitors and support teams were from accidents, some were shot and others kidnapped and held to ransom. A $50,0000+ dollar support truck is a tempting target for a person who earns $100 a year. I saw a swag of interviews over the years of family's that had their livelihoods wiped out after their (family members) cows, camels, sheep or goats were run over. The Western world would have no idea of what that would be like, these poor buggers probably came close to death or died from this lack of resources. Need to pay them something, preferably before people die. Time to grow up and move beyond selfish acts of this sort as they prove nothing in the face of human suffering and global warming. Good points but; Dakar also brings in large sums of money into the economies of the countries it passes through, which those economies will be without this year, causing more suffering. Also to me Dakar is about man striving to conquer incredible obstacles, and I think the human race needs to be able to do and see feats like this. We need to aspire to do extraordinary things, otherwise why bother? Quote

We need to aspire to do extraordinary things, otherwise why bother? They carry pretty much everything they need, it's a race not a luxury holiday. "I say Mumbopo, can you just take the Audi to the next check point while I have some more caviar and work on my tan. Oh! for this leg you will need to stay above 165 kilometres per hour, or no tip". You never hear the quote " yep stayed under water for two hours without taking a single breath". Though more people should try it, so I agree with you on one point. Extraordinary things are, improving the planet not just degrading it. Making sure 10,000,000 children a year don't die before their 5th birthday and that they will be fed, healthy and educated living a long useful and productive life (the rest of the children on the planet should be treated likewise). Exploring space and moving out of the womb, hopefully with more brains in the bulk of the population than we have displayed in recorded history. There is a whole heap of things we can aspire to that are more important, this is mush fed to your brain. You cannot change it and you can't interact with it, you can only watch impotently and robot like. All right, off track on this thread now so I will shut up. O.K. so your not a fan and don't appreciate the accomplishment of just finishing this event. I agree that there are more important things than Dakar and your sentiment regarding world poverty is admirable. I have made a difference to world poverty by sponsoring a kid (2 kids, one after the other) through World Vision for more than 10 years. So that's 9,999,998 kids to go. Fantastic to see someone doing the good deeds. I should not tell you this, but I have watched Dakar and occasionally other motor sports. I was merely saying that " we won't die from it's absence, having a bit of fun and pointing out that other things are more important". I do think that you need something to do while you drink beer on a lazy afternoon (what are they?). Does anyone know when it will be on again? Years? Never? Whenever conditions change? I was sponsoring a kid, whenever they gave me an update it contained a picture of a different child. I don't believe the letters were that of a child either, the spelling and backwards letters looked like an adult imitating a child's handwriting. Now I just give to Doctors without frontiers and the WWF. Edited January 10, 2008 by Sbox Quote
