Palmy Posted January 4, 2008 Report Posted January 4, 2008 hey i have jus recently noticed i have oil coming out from my carby and ruining the air filter. what this mean? is it bad? Quote
Trev Posted January 4, 2008 Report Posted January 4, 2008 Its more than likely coming from your PCV valve due to blowby, Stick a catch can on it if its too much. Quote
Trev Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 and the pcv valve is where? Post a pic of your engine bay and i will point it out. Quote

Palmy Posted January 5, 2008 Author Report Posted January 5, 2008 well there is no oil around the pcv valve, it is all around the top of the carby. Quote
Medicine_Man Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 it vents into the carb so it is sucked in and burned during combustion, if you get a lot of blowby it will start to build up oil inside... Quote
Murd 55 Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 i also get oil into my air filter. but not much just generally sits round the bottom around the airfilter. Quote
sammo[RL] Posted January 5, 2008 Report Posted January 5, 2008 Sounds like its coming in the other tube, not the PCV, the other one that runs into the base of the air cleaner. Run a small air filter rather then the tube, or as suggested a catch can. Quote
Palmy Posted January 6, 2008 Author Report Posted January 6, 2008 ok then, well i had an ex-mechanic check it out the other day that i know. and he said somethin bout gettin the bores re-done or somethin, i can't really rememba what he said. there is a slight oil build up inside the carby but nothin real bad. kangaroosa Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 (edited) ok then, well i had an ex-mechanic check it out the other day that i know. and he said somethin bout gettin the bores re-done or somethin, i can't really rememba what he said. there is a slight oil build up inside the carby but nothin real bad. Your mechanic is suggesting putting new rings/pistons in to fix the blow by. He's basically fixing the cause, rather than treating the symptoms. If your going to go to the trouble of re-ringing the engine, you may as well get the crank machined and new bearings fitted. Is the engine burning much oil? Either way, the mechanic is spot on. It also depends whether the engine is using that much oil that it's more cost effective to fix the cause, rather than replacing air filters and topping up oil levels. curly Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 (edited) your mechanic is 98% right, it,s pumping oil up the breather because it,s pressurising the sump, this can be caused by 2 problems 1 piston, rings OR 2 blown head gasket between bore & oil return galleries, this is very rare but either way don,t bother making catch cos it,s gonna shit it,s self anyway, take the air filter out ( so it doesn,t suck the oil up) drive it as easy as possible & start looking for a good 2nd hand motor Edited January 6, 2008 by curly Quote
Felix Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 Could be a sticky PCV valve. If the PCV valve isn't opening properly the crankcase will pressurise and blow oil up the breather pipe in the base of the airfilter. Pull the PCV valve out and shake it. Make sure it rattles. Give it a good cleanout with petrol or carby cleaner. If the PCV valve is gummed up the car won't idle as good as it should, as the PCV system acts as a controlled air leak. Quote
Memphis Posted January 6, 2008 Report Posted January 6, 2008 I had this very problem with my 5k in the ke70.... made a homemade catchcan from some hose, dacron and a drink bottle, car runs heaps better now since it's not trying to burn oil no more... Quote
