Sounds like its coming in the other tube, not the PCV, the other one that runs into the base of the air cleaner.

Run a small air filter rather then the tube, or as suggested a catch can.

Your mechanic is suggesting putting new rings/pistons in to fix the blow by. He's basically fixing the cause, rather than treating the symptoms. If your going to go to the trouble of re-ringing the engine, you may as well get the crank machined and new bearings fitted. Is the engine burning much oil?

Either way, the mechanic is spot on.

It also depends whether the engine is using that much oil that it's more cost effective to fix the cause, rather than replacing air filters and topping up oil levels.

your mechanic is 98% right, it,s pumping oil up the breather because it,s pressurising the sump, this can be caused by 2 problems 1 piston, rings OR 2 blown head gasket between bore & oil return galleries, this is very rare but either way don,t bother making catch cos it,s gonna shit it,s self anyway, take the air filter out ( so it doesn,t suck the oil up) drive it as easy as possible & start looking for a good 2nd hand motor

Could be a sticky PCV valve. If the PCV valve isn't opening properly the crankcase will pressurise and blow oil up the breather pipe in the base of the airfilter.

Pull the PCV valve out and shake it. Make sure it rattles. Give it a good cleanout with petrol or carby cleaner. If the PCV valve is gummed up the car won't idle as good as it should, as the PCV system acts as a controlled air leak.

I had this very problem with my 5k in the ke70.... made a homemade catchcan from some hose, dacron and a drink bottle, car runs heaps better now since it's not trying to burn oil no more...
