AJC Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 Thought you guys might find this one amusing. Just stripped out the diff from my brothers BMW 318i (about an 84 model). When I stripped down the diff there was about 100ml of oil (they are supose to have about 900ml) and all the metal gears had a nice heated blue look to them. Story goes - He was casually driving along at 110km/h and bang - rear wheels lock up! :bash: :y: Followed by a suitably long skid it released again. He was able to drive it for another 30kms with the stereo turned up. Eventual it needed a tow. Quote
HIGH ROLLER Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 HAHAHA what a classic...sorry for laughing, its unfortunate... wow, that would have been scary and a loud 30k before the tow... Quote
AJC Posted December 31, 2007 Author Report Posted December 31, 2007 HAHAHA what a classic...sorry for laughing, its unfortunate...wow, that would have been scary and a loud 30k before the tow... I've been giving him heaps about it. Yeah I think locking the rear wheels at that speed scared the crap out of him and didn't do the tyres much good either. very noisy diff. I have seen where they have damaged teeth on the gears but none where they have split the gear housing like this one. Amazin amount of force in this. Quote
coln72 Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 The missus managed to rip the entire housing out of the family truckster. Best one Ive seen was at an event. Corolla diff went bang and spat teeth out of the back of the housing. Corolla still drove though, so tap in metal around holes, seal with silastic and refill with oil. Then thrash the living shit out of Corolla until it finally stopped. Locking up back wheels at speed would be scary. Lucky everyone is in one piece and are around to tell the tale. Quote
7shades Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 I shattered the diff in an Ra40 once... I would have been doing a good 100kph on the highway when the rears locked up. Pretty damn scary when you floor the clutch and nothing changes... still sliding... still pouring white smoke like its on fire.... just hang on and hope the back wheels don't try to overtake the front  Quote
KE30_KE35_KE55 Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 I have repaired similar damage to a landcruiser rear diff, it was running two different profile tires front to back, frequently used in 4WD, the owner drove In to the workshop with a noise. the Carrier had cracked 3/4 of the way around on that one, a new diff center was fitted, I did think at the time perhaps a faulty casting. Rolla__Boy Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 A guy I know had a brand new LSD built...and picked it up from the shop, took it home, put it in the car...went for a drive...BOOM broken diff....Guess he thought the shop put oil in it hehe diffs prefer oil I have had my rears lock up at about 30...it was bad enough, I'd hate to have it happen at speed!!! My mate is currently driving a very "drift spec" VN Commodore at the moment with a CIG Locker, which started spitting teeth...there is about 6 or 7 dints in the rear of the housing, a few of which are leaking oil hehe...the locker still works, but has since been removed. WinKE55 Posted December 31, 2007 Report Posted December 31, 2007 diffs prefer oil Lol yes, I think they do prefer oil. It would of been scary. I wonder what would happen if that happened to me.. and I'm only on my L's lol.. Lucky he is okay =] By the way, those BMW's are very squishy in the back seat.. Quote
