KE555k Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 I'm going to start to attempt my first conversion over the next week or two, originally i was going to get it done by some-one who'd done it before, or a professional, but i think I'm going to try it with a few mates now. I already know that i'll have to cut an extension on the shifter hole for the 5 speed to come through in place of the ol' 4 speed. Is there any other cutting or anything that needs to be done to do this conversion? Also, will changing from a 4 speed to a 5 speed change my speedo? will it make it in-accurate? how do i fix this? anyone done this conversion want to give me any tipsa here or through PM very welcomed, thanks heaps guys! Nathan. Quote
Rollaboy2608 Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 (edited) you shouldnt need to cut the shifter hole unless you have a KE70 box or rear gbox housing. the beauty of the most of the K series motors, is, that they are pretty much held in by about 10 nuts and bolts, really straightforward swap. If this is your first conversion, just remember to pull out the radiator mate. Sounds like a really simple thing, but you'd be amazed how many people don't do it, and put their engine fan through the radiator haha. And make sure you have fun doing it!!Good luck Oh by the way, your speedo should be ok, I don't believe their is any difference between speedo drives from K40 to K50, although their are 2 different sizes for the drive housing itself. KE555k Posted December 11, 2007 Author Report Posted December 11, 2007 Thanks rolla boy, just talking to the guy when i bought the car he told me that the hole for the shifter would have to be lengthened? He did the conversion himself in the first place so maybe it is a ke70 box or housing? Thats good to hear about the speedo though! Yeah i was just thinking yesterday, it doesnt look that hard, ive looked at the bolts and everything and it seems like it'd be out within an hour even being a beginner. I'm actually considering even buying my own engine crane. Once again is there anyone whos done this parrticular conversion who wouldnt mind answering a few more of my questions? Thanks heaps guys, your always a great help. Nathan. Quote
Rolla__Boy Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Putting a 5K in is no different to pulling your 4K out and putting it back in... Quote

Xany Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 There is different speedo drives....for different speedo's.....i had an issue with my 5 speed when i put my last k50 in my car. If you do put the wrong one in, it will only be out about 10k until you find the right one. It's a pretty easy swap.....as the 4K and 5K are basically the same size engine. Just make sure to undo all the earth straps on the engine.....i always seem to miss one. :P Quote
