machg Posted July 13, 2008 Author Report Posted July 13, 2008 Thanks mate, I am aiming to fill all but the smallest of holes, and keep everything reasonable straight and only use bog for minor imperfections, no to fill holes, LOL. Quote
xstatic Posted July 13, 2008 Report Posted July 13, 2008 don't quote me on this but i have read that when welding like u have on the body only do about 50mm of weld and then stop for awhile to let the metals cool down cause it helps prevent warping. You might already know if u do call be captain obvious. looking good to have been following ur progress, good luck cheers scott Quote
machg Posted July 13, 2008 Author Report Posted July 13, 2008 Yeah, I have been "spot" welding first to try and reduce warpage, but that's a pretty big hole I had to fill. Thanks for comments. Quote
machg Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 (edited) Got heaps done today, removed steering box and engine crossmember (rack and pinion, here I come!) cut out all the remaining rust from the firewall forward, rust converted and fabricated replacement panels for the holes. Tomorrow I'll weld in the panels. Edited July 24, 2008 by machg Quote

machg Posted July 26, 2008 Author Report Posted July 26, 2008 Faster, easier, safer and more comfortable. Don't you love tax returns?! Quote
PatW Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Faster, easier, safer and more comfortable. Don't you love tax returns?! The autodarkening helmet is great help in welding. I used to use them in my class. They can be hard to use when welding in some awkward position, or in situation when the light at the back is brighter the then welding pieces at the front. Quote
machg Posted August 7, 2008 Author Report Posted August 7, 2008 Have set a new goal for "lazarust" want to go 1kracing (see www.1kracing.com.au). Have found a reasonable T18 donor car if I can find the $$$. Quote
machg Posted August 10, 2008 Author Report Posted August 10, 2008 Grrr, thought I would find the $$$ for the donor car by selling my (siezed) series 2 RX7. Now it looks like I might miss out, bloody Tasmania. Quote
Beserker99 Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 Hey, don't worry about, from what I've seen on most forums, Tassie is full of T18's. Here in Perth, it took me like 3 years to find my first T18, and that was by accident. Oh yeah, I like what you're doing with the car. These TE71's are dead sexy cars! Quote
machg Posted August 11, 2008 Author Report Posted August 11, 2008 Well, the guy I who was selling the donor car has been very kind (and supportive of project "lazarust") and allowed me to take possesion of "jesus" the donor car and given me some time to come up with the money. "jesus" might be a bit too good to give his life (cut up) for lazarust, LOL. I might just use his less rusty form as a more accurate template for making replacement panels, then remove the parts I need to complete lazarust and sell the rest as a semi-complete car. More details and pics of "jesus" tomorrow. Quote
machg Posted August 15, 2008 Author Report Posted August 15, 2008 (edited) Picked up an AE71 engine x member today, I will finally be able to start moving forward with lazarust again. Actually, its been good having a donor car ("jesus") to work/play with, because I can try the things that might or might not work on it first (like the "Makita" springs) and if it doesn't work, then I'm not wrecking lazarust. KE30_KE35_KE55 Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 I am currently collecting sheet metal equipment also starting to learn how to fabricate whole panels for vintage cars. I found site You might be interested in called metal shapers. http://metalshapers.org/instructions/album_faq.shtml Quote
