LittleRedSpirit Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 machg said: mines a TE71 too, I might stick with the current (T series) crossmember, as I think it positions the engine a bit further forward in the engine bay than an A series crossmember, possibly avoiding the need to mess with the firewall. Firstly, if you want the car to handle as well as anyone elses' xe7x then use the crossmember which positions the motor as close to the fire wall as possible. A 4age is a nice light motor and will be nice tucked into the firewall as far back as possible. Weight in front of the front axles is not preferred if it can be avoided. If you change the position of the motor, will you be able to use the standard gearbox crossmember and is the height the motor sits at correct. WHat about tailshaft length? Will you ned a non standard manufactured one? Also, if the motor sits any higher than a standard A crossmember would make it you may misalign something in the driveline once you try to connect it all up. Also, a 7age is several mm taller than a 4age, and Ive personally witnessed a 16valve 7age throttle body rubbing on the underside of the bonnet. This was with a standard A series crossmember and engine mounts, in a ke70. I certainly would avoid raising it at all costs. Not saying you're doing it wrong necessarily, never done this conversion myself, I just don't want to see you waste any time and effort and find these things out the hard way. If your confident that you wont misalign the drive line by doing it this way then id say go for it. If you arent sure however, Id stick with all the premanufactured A series standard parts to save money and place the engine and driveline in the ideal spot. Quote

Its suck it and see, and a lack of $$$ guiding this project I'm afraid, if someone wants to donate an A series crossmember and rack...LOL Also treating this as a learning experience, once I get a T18 donor car for driveline parts etc. I will have a better idea about fitment. As it sits at the moment, the engine is secure in the car, I can work out wiring and cooling options, (the motors not going to move THAT far on different mounts) and can think about getting rid of the other donor vehicle. Thanks for feedback guys Edited February 2, 2008 by machg Quote
Medicine_Man Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Yeah, Those mounts look a lot better than the last ones did.. Interesting to see they bolt up pretty much the same.. Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 Custom one piece tailshaft is gonna cost a lot more than an a series crossmember and steering setup, if it does come to that. It may not, but without knowing, Id be finding out first. Quote
machg Posted February 15, 2008 Author Report Posted February 15, 2008 Been a while, had a go at hooking up the cooling system today. Basically its all FWD with just cuts to the two pipes that run across the block under the intake manifold, and repositioned the remote thermostat housing. Stuck with ancient computer ATM, will post pics later Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 Hows she going mate? Any progress? Very keen to see this unique beast get on the road!! Quote
machg Posted June 10, 2008 Author Report Posted June 10, 2008 Boy, such a long wait for progress. I finally got an ebay welder and some 8mm gasless wire and have been teaching myself to weld on the poor car! Its a looooong way to go, but at least I can start making some some small progress. Starting to think about maybe trying to get rego. one day. I bought the car with no papers, and it doesn't have a compliance plate. I want it to be all above board, so I am not going to try any dodgy shit, but given that its going to have a lot of T18 components when finished, and it is basically a T18 with a different back, can I convince the authorities to treat it as one for rego. purposes? Given its age (pre-1986) and the fact that it is even here, (would have had to have been imported with the intention of registration, or race/rally) I should also be able to convince the authorities to allow registration under the previous "over 15 year old" rule. Regardless, I am going to fix up the shell and get it running, and at the very least have some circuit fun in it. Will get some pics of my dodgy welding later. machg Quote
machg Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 Previous owner found Tasmania registration papers for lazarust from 1st Australian owner, registration just became that much easier! (If it met criteria for registration once, then as long as its roadworthy, I should be able to get it again). RX7 just shat itself, so that makes registration more attractive. No money, but plenty to do with welder, so I'm happy. Quote

Close to (Carlton) Cheers, Moe If Tony was indeed the first owner/importer of this car, I would like to get in contact with him as I will probably try for registration further down the track, which he might be able to help with (paperwork) Quote
machg Posted June 29, 2008 Author Report Posted June 29, 2008 (edited) Have finished the welding on the first rust repair (front most crossmember) will post pics once I have made it half presentable with the angle grinder, ROFL. I am also negotiating to buy back her original engine as I think it might help with possible future registration (matching numbers would have to be helpful, LOL) Donor vehicle is gone too.
