SoulSearcher Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 I think I blew up my turbo .... again and 500 klms out of warranty and 4 days after I got it back from my 100,000 klm service.... yesterday and today whilst I had the radio off and the window down I heard this air sucking noise, you know like when you put on a brand new K&N air filter and it's working well? Well I thought that it may be that becuase the RAA inspection I had done what, 10 days ago said it was dirty... so I paid no mind, but it was bothering me, so I kept an ear out.... Then tonight when I was going home, I had to overtake some cyclists who were taking up the whole goddamn road so I changed down to third and zoomed past them (not crazy) and the car had a conniption fit and it sounded like ... ummm all the air had come out of a ballon noise.... it was spooling up but it didn't feel punchy and there wasn't the turbo boost zoom pssshhttt noise ...... it was a constant farty sound. I checked all the hoses and the connections but I don't know whether to get to towed to toyota, or if I should contact the people who re-built it, or if maybe a hose has come loose, the thing that really shits me is that it was running beautifully BEFORE they did the service....and this always seems to happen, I put it in, and I get it back with a bigger problem...AND maybe the warranty is void because I've gone over the 100,000 klms.... f@$kity, f@$k, f@$k, poo! PS: sorry for my swearing I'm just uber annoyed and upset.... Quote
LittleRedSpirit Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 (edited) So rip the shitty standard manifolds off it and modify it till its the toughest bottom end around. Get full custom pipework for intake and exhaust, fmic, maybe a 4age head, disco potato, dyno tune and thrash it soooo hard that it makes you forget all those bad standard turbo warranty claims. Jono Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 take it back to toyota, if you complain well enough they will fix it. Quote
KE30_KE35_KE55 Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 take it back to toyota, if you complain well enough they will fix it. I would let some one independent look at it first like RAA or definitely not the same dealership if its out of warranty. then hit them thru consumer affairs to fix it. the law states any repair must have a reasonable life. a few weeks is hardly a reasonable life. SoulSearcher Posted November 28, 2007 Author Report Posted November 28, 2007 (edited) I just have to figure out if I should tow it, or drive it..... just making calls now...oh the turbo has been in for 4 months now, (gosh doesn't time fly?) SoulSearcher Posted November 29, 2007 Author Report Posted November 29, 2007 OOOOHHHHH KAAAYYYYYYYYYYY.... who feels like a bit of an idiot? >ME< here's a run down of what I've been up to since 8 this morning (waiting for the mechanics to get in...) phoned a friend he wasn't there so spoke to my friends boss (who's a mechanic) who gave me some tips spoke to consumer affairs left a message with the turbo guy spoke to my mechanic who said "it doesn't sound like you've blown it up lesley" PHEW! it sounds like a hose has come off, have you checked them? (well I looked at the top of the engine but it was dark and I didn't have a torch and I was panicing), :ok, go and check the piping off the turbo *and another thing I can't remember what it's called but COULD be the air intake meter) and it's on the side (he said top but it's actually on the side) of the air filter... called the RAA in readiness for a tow truck..... looked under the car and couldn't see much cause I only have about this much room > < I thought there was a hose loose UNDERNEATH the turbo, so jacked it up to have a better look and saw that the BOTTOM INTERCOOLER PIPE HAD COME OFF COMPLETELY  oh, just as a side note - men are so nice - they see a woman on the side of the road with their bonnet up and they stop and offer assistance - the first one thought I was changing a tyre and offered to do it for me, and I explained that I was ok, I was just figuring out how to put the intercooler pipe back on and that's why I was jacking up the car, he said "you know what an intercooler pipe is?" me grinning, "uh yeah, really, I'm ok, thank you.... " he said "oh, ok .... nice car by the way" ;) then the second nice man that stopped asked if I was ok, and I said "yes, I'm fine, really, I'm not in any trouble, it's all under control", and he said "good job, I like your car". The third man that stopped (by this time I was kinda getting annoyed with all the interruptions, LOL) peered down at me through the engine bay (cause I was under the car by this time) said "you ok there?" me "yep, everything's great, just putting this pipe back on" him, "ok then, I'll leave you to it" finished doing that but still under the car and the RAA man rocks up. "you ok".... me: "well, I've spoken to my mechanic and he said to check the hoses so I did, and I think it's this one here points ----> I've put it back on and tightened up the hose clamp, but would you mind just checking it out for me please?". he was impressed with what I'd done (which made me feel chuffed and not so much of an idiot) and said that I'd done a good job, but I hadn't tightened up the hose clamp enough and I put the wheel chock in the wrong place - BUT I LEARNT SOMETHING NEW! so it seems to be working, all ok, but on the test drive there was a slight sucking noise so I rang my mechanic back and I am just on my way down there for the car to go up on the hoist and check everything out and on an extended road test I'll be able to ascertain if there is any of the other noise.... so a great big PHEW!!!!! I was so scared that the turbo had blown up and that I would have to do without my car AGAIN for an extended time..... Lesley  Quote
irokin Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Turbos are durable little things these days. It would be one of the last things I would be expecting to blow. As long as you treat them right (let them warm up before thrashing the beejesus out of them), use a turbo matched to the application and the oil supply doesn't stop they should last for many many years. Theres not much else I can think of that can do 100,000rpm+ with EGTs of 500+ degrees day in day out for many thousands of hours/kilometers. Quote
7shades Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 The CT20 on my 1988 surf is still puffing hard, with no freeplay in the shaft at all... never been reconditioned. Quote
philbey Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 lets not forget to cool them down as well! My old man has a truck turbine shaft that took a few too many hot shutdowns before it severed itself, and the amount of carbon buildup on it is amazing. Quote
7shades Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Yep.... cooldown is soooo important. I think thats the reason mine has lasted so long. Turbo timer fitted from factory. Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 *and another thing I can't remember what it's called but COULD be the air intake meter) and it's on the side (he said top but it's actually on the side) of the air filter... For future reference, thats the air intake temperature sensor Quote
