how can you tell if 1st gear is shattered? or if your diff is F***ed ?

:) !!!!!!!!!!! - ill explain more when i get home from school, but lets just say today i had to move the car up the driveway, and when i was in first gear the car_went_bang. Reverse still worked...

sob sob sob sob sob

Update : Its not the gearbox or diff, but the breaks. The noise still haunts me

"bang"?

If you were "just moving your car up the driveway" I doubt if you've broken your gearbox or your diff, unless you were planning on doing a burnout up your driveway or something...

I've become an expert at knowing when my diff has gone. Clues:

1. bits of metal sticking out the back of the diff (okay so that's a bit obvious) - a "bang" noise was certainly heard, but generally this follows the dumping of the clutch

2. When it's only just starting to go - whir kind of noise from the rear. To test: put clutch in when going down a hill, if the whir noise is still there, there could be something wrong.

But yours sounds like something else. If you can drive normally in reverse, it's not the diff or the clutch. Do you have any drive at all in any other gear? Fook is right, we need more info!

btw: the above is based on my limited experience - more experienced mechanical heads please correct me if I'm wrong.

I highly doubt Teddy was doing anything stupid.

A wine in the diff (depending how bad) doesnt mean the end. In my experience they can last quite a long time (and plenty of abuse). But you kinda have to change the oil more often and keep on top of how much theyre wearing out.

I figured as much. Just trying to think of what it could have been. Sometimes my clutch pedal goes slightly out of alignment with the master cylinder and binds slightly and makes a big "clonk" sound, but it will still work anyway and my gears etc still change.

Actually Teddy, that's sort of happened to me once before on the way down to Byron Bay in Pinky (with Haikal and a whole bunch of PF people). What happened was the circlip on the clutch cable decided to take a walk. The sudden snap in the cable made a big "bang" sound and well, after that I had no clutch. I'd be guessing that's what's happened to yours.

Ok people I'm back from school, and i draged ian home with me.

This smorning when i was moving it, and it made the bang noise (like metal exploding / crunching and a MASSSIVE shuder throughout the entire car + car instally stopping (by this time clutch was in, and i jamed it into reverse as fast as possible (went in eazy) and just majorly sliped the clutch to move it backwards about 2 M))

i then just turned it off and ran inside like a girl, but with obsenities coming out of my mouth  !

Anway back to when ian and i got home , first thing we did was i started it up, no breaks and slowly relased the clutch with it in first - it felt VERY slugish and was making like a squeeking / slight grindish type noise, hard to describe.

We then thought lets take the wheels off, and try to remove the drum covers to see whats going on. Well, both wouldnt come off. We then realized when both wheels were on the car, up in the air, only the rear right wheel could be turned backwards, not fowards(fowards direction wasnt happening)...as ian was turning the back right wheel in reverse direction with a bit of force, the other side was_not_moving (out of gear, no breaks on) - WTF ! and when we tried to turn the rear left side, it wouldnt move *period* !

Soo i thought fark this, its either the breaks have seased over 2 nights (rob drove it friday evening, and it was fine, hasnt been driven since) or the diff is um... not too good. It was still making the noise when the back right wheel was being turned. I got into the car, and slowly released first (motor on) and took clutch completly out and it moved, (no throtal) but it was making the noise a bit, and it was very very very slugey. I gave it some herbs while slipping the clutch (10 kmh?) then slamed the breaks on. Did this in reverse too. Then did it fowards and backwards once more, locking the wheels up each time (oh dam its got body roll!) - anway, after that it appeard to be much better, it was not as slugesh, but the diff noise was still there...somwhere - but nothing like this-smorning

So, in conclusion -> we think the breaks in the rear had seased up, but it still doesnt explain the bang noise, and the rear right wheel only being able to be turned in reverse motion, i think ian turned it the other way a lil bit using un-humane force, but ahhh ! I'm not convinced that the diff is 100% healthy... Eeeekkkk

Remember awhile ago the breaks seased up on me? - i had to use ALOOOOOOT of slipping clutch to get the car to budge, once i got it moving it was basically foot to the floor with clutch out, breaks gave up and car when launching foward.. and it hasnt been an issue since. But when that happened, there was no noise, espically nothing like this smorning.

Over and out !

Ahh, Mr Dixon to the rescue again - basically the breaks had seased the selves pretty frekin tight to the inside of the drum, the back left being the worst, and we came to the conclusion that the bang was the combination of the breaks going and the clutch.. i still don't understand why it was such a sudden thing tho.. but I'm glad its sorted.

It's the spelling fairy's day off, so I'm going to have to translate.

Rear Drums had adjusted themselves up REALLY tight. Drums off, adjustment made, drums on. Was it quite that simple? No, but you get the idea..:)

Didn't test drive it, but I have confidence!!

ahh u should of given your car a few revs, i was upstairs using the pc lol

sorry about that !

thankyou rob for yor endless support and help - hopefully when the car makes a very haunting noise next time, i wont cry wolf lol

corolla drums adjust themselves when in reverse only. perhaps having the handbrake on and having the car parked on a downhill angle doesn't help? i usually prefer to park nose down anyway if i can't park flat, it seems to make starting easier if the car's been sitting for a while or it's cold, no idea why
