Timing light and give it some revs to check the timing does advance and isn't sticking if that was the case it would be doing it all the time, not just on start up, which is why the choke would be the first place to look. If the choke butterfly or linkage is gummed up enough it could be sticking Quote

If the choke butterfly or linkage is gummed up enough it could be sticking yeah i'll have a look at the choke. it usually does it on a cold start. no problems if the engine is warmed up. its making a very loud ticking noise now as well, all through the rev range, not just on idle. i have a feeling this could be related to the timing though as i havent had a chance to adjust it or check it. You had better check that the centrifical advance is free. Lubricate if necessary. Quote
