raff_gsr Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Hey guys how are you all? Ive got myself a KE30 finally after looking for so long, but she needs a little bit of work to get her up to scratch before I'll pop a new motor in her. At first I was going to go 4AGZE, then 1UZFE but with all the costs involved etc I decided it wouldnt be worth it in the long run. Thing is, Ive got a Mitsubishi Cordia as well which ive spent money on only to find out that to rego it i'll need to go to regency, so I'm pretty cut about that, but in my garage, ive got 2 pretty much brand new 4G63's. They are both imported and from the Galant VR4's, with one making 220 fwkw at 15psi in a cordia before I bought. Question is this; how hard would it be to put her in? She'll definitely fit, and new engine mounts are a given (I'll make em myself, shouldnt be too hard) but what can I do about a gearbox? Does anyone know if any toyota boxes like a w50 or something will fit on? And also another thing, in South Australia, what would the requirements be to engineer her? Would RA40 front struts and disk brakes, plus a diff upgrade with diskbrakes as well (any ideas or suggestions) suffice? Also are there any corollas with efi that I can take their tank out of and put it in mine to save for putting a surge tank in? Cheers to everyone in advance! Quote
Jordan Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 How's it, If you've got a Twin cam 4G63 floating around go for it. They're a solid well engineered motor. As for sticking into a RWD application, do a serch on the Sigma/starion forums, it's been done plently of times so the answers will likley be there. I'm thinking a late model starion gearbox might be the go? Don't bother with engineering in Adelaide, as you'll get defected anyway. Just make it as tidy as possible, with good brakes and suspensin to match. A good option is the "Hilux 4spot/peugoet 405 disc/Corona XT130(or RT132) strut" option. Unfortunatly no E3X corolla's came with EFI, but the easyest option is to low mount a Bosh inline pump (think 910, 044.) Since the fuel tank is in the boot this isn't hard. that said adding a surge tank is always a good idea. Cheers Jordan Quote
raff_gsr Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 with the hilux rear end, ive heard it can cost up to 2 grand to do it. thats heaps! are there any cheaper options that can still take the power? so i shouldnt worry about engineering? how can i get defected with a certificate though? cheers for the help so far though, ive found some info for the gearbox so thats a good starting point ey! 7shades Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Pretty sure gearboxes from petrol delica/starwagon will bolt up... Quote
raff_gsr Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 i'll need to check that one. all i know is that the vr4 motor ive got is a narrowblock and the engines in sigmas and starions are wideblocks. i'll have to investigate further though! Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 This is one of the smartest, most possible suggestions ive seen pop up in this column for a fair while, i say go for it, it wouldnt have been done to a corolla before i think so you get pionts for originality too. raff_gsr Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 hey thanks mate :) hopefully she wont be too difficult to pull of though ey! Quote
Jordan Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 engineering reports in SA mean squat, and will continue to do so until we are required to undertake yearly/bi-yearly roadworthy's like the eastern states. It's kind of a catch 22. So most people mod their cars keep the rego up and dive sensibly. Delica/starwagon gearbox's might work, but I'm rather certain they have a 4WD transfere case attached to them. Good news is there is bound to be someone that makes a 4G63-W5X bellhousing. cheers jordan Quote
raff_gsr Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 yeah that'd be right ey! ah well i wont be hammering her stupidly thats forsure. i heard dellow make 4G63-W5X bellhousings but apparently theyve stopped production! might need to look into it further. just quietly, is it possible to put some sort of lsd/locker in my current diff that will make it strong as hell or are the diff housings really weak? 7shades Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 (edited) Not all starwagons are 4wd... There's the 7 seater starwagon and commercial 'express' 2wd. That being said, I went through 2 boxes in 60 thousand k's in my Delica so they're probably made of balsawood and promises like everything else from mitsubishi Edited October 24, 2007 by 7shades Quote
raff_gsr Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 yeah thats the thing I'm scared of most, having a box that will fall apart. according to the guys on austarion, the l200 ute box fits up, and is fair strong if you treat her well so i guess thats the route i'll take. any ideas for the rear end that is cheap and isnt too hard? Quote
7shades Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 aaah to have a leaf spring rear end. sooo easy. Pintara? Quote
raff_gsr Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 sounds gd to me! theyd b fair strong though right? atleast to handle round 230-250 rwkw? lsd maybe? Quote
oh what a nissan feeling! Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 pintara diffs are the right housing but you need to convert them to 4 pin centre, (some ea falcons can donate) with the two pin centre they wont last long. Quote
VHR32 Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 A Steve Knight in Adelaide used to race a 4G63 Sigma in IPRA class with a supra box behind it. Contact: Steve Knight Adelaide, Australia (08) 8325 1197 Sounds like a great conversion, one I had never thought of... A 3.7 or 3.9 28 spline Skyline diff would be ideal, just fit a Lokka centre from http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/lokka.htm and away you go! You can always change to a 4.1 Pintara centre if needed.
