kangaroosa Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 I have been getting prices and opinions on a decent brake upgrade for my KE30 in anticipation of the 12A being dropped in soon. A bloke on Ausrotary is doing kits to suit Early Corollas, Mazdas etc. and I'm after peoples opinions/thoughts on whether this is worth it, or whether the corona strut converted to coilovers/hilux calipers setup would be the better option. The following is basically what he supplies. He confirms that i wont need to upgrade the master cylinder/booster for the calipers. Its alot of money, but i'm sure they will pull the car up pretty damn well. I'm just concerned that it may be a little bit of overkill. I've been told that the Corona upgrade will cost $900 ish. Thoughts? we can ship to Melbourne no worries that about $60 to $100 depending on what set up we go for. well then what we will need to use is the biggest disc for that wheel. I can supply you with, a set of 300mm vented, slotted and cross drilled discs with the alloy centre just like in the pics. two recon PRB twin spot callipers. all adaptor plates and bolts to suite KE30 new brake pads new wheel bearings but I will need you to send me your hubs so I can replace them for you. new 2 1/2" wheel studs and bolts and brake line adapters. basically everything you will need to get going you wont need to buy anything other than brake fluid. if you like you can send me your struts and I can fit the brakes and the whole lot and just ship them back. I can supply you that upgrade for about $1400 to your door. if you can send your struts over that will be perfect because that way I can make sure everything fits well and send them back. give me a call if you need to know anything else. LittleRedSpirit Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) http://www.technotoytuning.com/ These guys may be able to do something. That sounds like a lot of money. Same cost as a hopper stoppers kit. If you can afford it, give it a whirl. The setup you showed us looks tuff as. Edited October 23, 2007 by LittleRedSpirit Quote

ancullen Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 My plans for the KE55 are to use the standard KE55 strut, use the front discs from a new Mini (need redrilling to 4x114.3 stud pattern), and custom mounting brackets with S4 RX7 four piston calipers. New discs cost roughly $300-400, the calipers can be bought for about $200, and from the research I've done I'm estimating $300 max for the brackets. Then I just need brake lines and master cylinder to suit. I've already got a Pajero master cylinder (cost me $50 second-hand), so I'll use that and get braided brake lines made up to fit the RX7 calipers and Pajero master cylinder. All up that should come to under $1,400 (hopefully under $1,000 if I can get good deals), and the RX7 calipers should work significantly better than the Commodore calipers (that's what they look like) being used in the kit you've shown. And as for Hopper Stoppers, I'm pretty certain it's the same kit, and they definitely use Commodore calipers. Quote
kangaroosa Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 I've been in talks with another Vic member on his setup. I'm tending to lean to his setup at the moment. Corona Struts fitted with a coilover kit. Apparently Pedders did his for $500 supplied with springs. Corona LCA's. Peugeot 504 Rotors 276mm Hilux Calipers VN V8 1" Master Cylinder - Apparently a direct bolt in. All up, under $1000. I'm pretty sure the brakes will pull up hard enough, and the adjustable ride height is an added bonus. I'm sure there are better setups, but this will be quite sufficient. Quote
Jono Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 good brakes are great to have but are you going to the track with this car? how quick will it be with a NA 12A in it? Quote
kangaroosa Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 (edited) Engineer has requested a brake upgrade. Budget is not an issue...but i like to get a good deal on most things. Will it see a race track? Highly doubt it. Are bigger brakes necessary for me to get the Engineers Certificate? Yes I just don't want to under do it, but at the same time I don't want to get ripped off. Hence why coilovers and decent brakes for $1000 is more appealing than brakes only for $1500. That sounds an excellent deal. It should definitely pull you up quickly enough. Sure Hilux calipers aren't light, but if you're not overly concerned about that, then do it! And you could always use that setup and swap to RX7 calipers later on if you wanted. I think you'd just need the adaptor bracket and the calipers will work with the rest of the setup - I think. kangaroosa Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 I'm pretty much resigned to the setup i have stated above. However for fact gathering purposes....... Anyone got any experience with how good series one RX7 calipers are? I have a complete series 1 rx7 in my back yard as a donor car for the engine and gearbox. Quote
ancullen Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I've been led to believe that there isn't a great deal of difference between them and Girlock KE55 calipers. Could be wrong though, as it's second hand info. Never tried them myself. Quote
Taz_Rx Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 I've been led to believe that there isn't a great deal of difference between them and Girlock KE55 calipers. Could be wrong though, as it's second hand info. Never tried them myself. you mean ke55 girlock vs S1 rx7 (sumitomots IIRC)? The S1 calipers would be a little bit bigger and better than the girlocks, come from a sports car! But if you were going to go to the trouble of changing calipers, there would be better options than the s1 calipers...like s4/5 as stated. here's mine..... They're for my RX4 though, not the corolla. tas_ae71 Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Hi, i don't mean to advertise but I'm an official distributor for T3 parts in Australia. Andrew, that only part that has ever had any trouble is a panhard which doesn't take a beating like a bushed one does. I'm not as familia with pre ke70 tuning, but if you able to swap to sprinter struts then that give you a huge chose when it comes to suspension. Andrew that big brake kit that I offer is of very high quality. wilwood 4 piston callipers and 280mm vented, slotted and drilled rotors! braided lines, brackets, different pads. I don't know how you can get much better than that? Wilwood is a highly respected brand and the rotors have been tried and tested. Andrew if you wish to comment on your own personal experiences with your unsatisfaction please feel free to comment me, I'm always keen to hear feed back on products I sell, although you buy anything from me.. ancullen Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 You may want to contact Dave Lawson at AJPS - he's apparently getting some RX7 to AE86 caliper brackets made to suit Mini Cooper discs. If they're a good price, you may be able to do a big brake conversion even cheaper. Although that being said, I still think the coilover converted kit sounds an EXCELLENT deal. Quote
styler Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 sorry but i doubt those mini cooper disc setups will be avaliable anytime in the next few years. Quote
