TIMMMAAAAYYY Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 Need help.......welding spare wheel well into boot......where do I clamp the earth clamp to? Quote
demuire Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 Anywhere that has conductivity to where you are welding. Preferably something big and beefy, preferably somewhere close to where you are welding. What about the supports at the sides of the boot? That's where I had mine clamped. Quote
irokin Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 I would avoid gasless mig if at all possible. Quote
demuire Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 It's no worse than a stick welder... Quote
irokin Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 But would you take to your car with a stick welder trying to weld a spare wheel well into the car? Gasless is quite different to standard MIG (or GMAW as the now more technically correct term). The wire structure is different hence it creates a different type of arc and you get all kinds of funny stuff happening. I just don't think its very suitable for welding thin metals. The most delightful machine Ive ever used for welding thin metals was a 350amper. It was hugely powerful (welding 15mm plate was a breeze) but you could ajust it so delicately down low. Quote
demuire Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 (edited) Well, no I wouldn't. Not on sheet metal anyway. I do know people who would, and do, though. And yes I agree standard MIG rocks, a heap better than gasless (I've been using my "standard" one gasless for a bit because I don't have any gas at the moment). Flux core wire isn't all that bad, but it isn't as good as normal wire with gas either. And yes, the MIGs at Tafe rocked. My little thing is so crap in comparison... irokin Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 Yea...but youd expect them to be that good for the price...mmm remote hand controller. Apparently flux core shortens the life of your gun lead sleeve because it leaves crap all inside it? Quote
demuire Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 Hmm... Possible. But isn't the flux on the inside (hence flux core)? I didn't buy the flux core wire, it came with my welder... Quote
Peter Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 Would have to agree with Irokin. Get a real Mig and you will notice the difference. Won't tell what our WIA 180 cost but I'm sure Irokin can guess. Best carton of piss I ever bought. (oops) Quote
trdcamrypride Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 gasless mig is good if you are in a really windy place. Quote
