Don't know bout 5ks, but a 3k is 8 degress BTDC, So i would go around 5-6 to start with, and go from there. Depends what fuel your running to.

BTW a timing light helps very much!

Your ignition timing should be 8 degrees BTDC. Your timing marks start at 0 and go up in 5 degree incriments. There should be a round dot between 5 and 10 degrees to show you the correct timing. If you run your timing to advanced your motor will ping it head of under load.

I just converted my 5K back to solid lifters and a 296 duration cam. I found the best way to set the timing was by ear and driving.

Rotate the distributor until the revs peak/ or level off without sounding like its going to stall. Go for a drive and see how it feels. Advance the timing gradually until it pings and then back it off slightly. I actually set the timing this morning and it goes like a charm.

12 deg BTDC will not make it ping its head off. Used to run with more before unleaded fuel came in. Those in the know always told me to add half again to what the factory recomended :D

I have heard that 10 degrees BTDC is best for 4K engines, so I don't see what would be different in the 5K when it comes to timing. And I believe 8 degrees BTDC is a factory setting for both the 3K and 4K
