i still had half a tank at that stage.

i filled it up this morning, and the needle didn't rise much past half way.

not that i need the fuel gauge anymore, as i have a travel odometer now :)

yesterday was as changing as the weather is in melbourne.....up and down and sideways all bloody day.

went out to visit dave (te278u), spent a few hours admiring the collection that seems to be growing (in more ways than one). left my tools at home, so couldn't really do much of anything

organised to check out a set of rims from someone. inquired about a second set from another dude, but they were 'in storage' so didn't get to see those

spent 30 mins or so playing around with the rims i was looking at, fitment on the front is a bit close (tire to strut) and they stick out a *smidge* which would/could be fixed by running a smaller tyre on the fronts.

upon leaving, there was a lovely tin can clang happening under the car. first thought was a hubcap came loose and the trim ring was rattling. so i pulled over to check the hubbies, they were all fine. i jumped in, selected reversed and it went clanging again as i started to move.

out i get again, and have a quick play with the tailshaft. sure enough, the rear seal on the box has flogged itself out (due to my front uni being a bit sticky) so the dust covers of the box and yolk are hitting each other.

i managed to get home (after doing about 200kms yesterday) and thought it should be right for a few days of train station service, but alas twas not the case. i've left it 50 meters from home with the club lock on. will be pushing it home tonite where it will be layed up for a couple of weeks while i tend to swapping extension housings from the ke70 5spd box i have, as well as more tacho cluster play and the tailshaft being fixed by a professional.

i've organised to have some "sik toons" installed next weekend: head unit, 6 1/2" speakers, 12" sub and amp...which i might need to shelve due to the current situation. i'll give more details friday morning once i've had a few days to assess the situation calmly and clearly.

cheers dave....

as it turns out, the fix was MUCH simpler than first thought. while everything else will still be happening (box swap, tailshaft fixed, stereo install, tacho cluster) it's going to happen over a few weeks, not immediately like first thought.

i went over everything b/w gearbox and diff, all was as it should be. couldn't find anything out of the ordinary, so i decided to rule out what it wasn't instead of finding what it was.

i popped the bonnet open and the first thing i saw was my aircleaner had separated. the nut had come off, the lid was wedged between the fan and radiator, and the filter was resting on the swaybar/x-member.

the tin-clanging noise i was hearing on sunday was the lid rattling against the strut brace. when i took off yesterday morning, as i was on a huge downward slope, the lid has jumped off, the filter has also and they both went and hit the fan, giving me my big angry noises.

so i put the filter and lid on the side of the road, started the car, drove a few metres forward and back, no new noises, no tincan rattle. i put the cleaner back together and drove it round the block and into the driveway.

over-thinking what could be the problem really isn't worth it. altho, now that i know nothings wrong, i feel like i've just saved $100-$200 on repairs :sob:

what a bloody weekend that was.

i'll start by saying that i've had a nasty cough for 2 weeks now.....

with the car still not really fit for much else other than short trips, i decided i'd go for a short drive to warrnambool and play AFL with the Finnish team that's here for the AFL International Cup. 3hrs drive (going the inland route) around midday on sunday, was fine for the first hour, then all hell broke loose. it was the theme for the weekend, mighty cold and lots of rain! was raining for the last 2 hrs of my driving, some spots was bloody fierce, had to slow from 110 down to 50 cos you just couldn't see a damn thing.

got there all right in the end. met all the blokes soon after arriving in warrnambool. went out for dinner, had me some kangaroo (which they overcooked, it shouldn't be cooked past medium-rare) slept ok-ish, only took me an hour of coughing to fall asleep. took the bus with the team to the local college for the game against their main rivals, Sweden. game started at 11am, was about 12 degrees, wind blowing across the ground at around 20km/h, and raining every 10 mins or so, varying between light and hard. had an alright game (considering i've only played 2 games of AFL in my life, both with i was 10 years old) missed a shot early on (which was their first score for the tournament) took a screamer in the last quarter and kicked a goal, set up another just after that. we outscored them in the last quarter, but lost 6.7 43 to 2.2 14.

had my calves worked after the game, on cos they cramped up something severe in the 3rd quarter (spent some time vomiting in the back line shortly after the cramps hit...) watched south africa beat the usa convincingly, which is always good seeing them lose no matter what it is. left warrnambool at about 3:30pm, drove in perfect sunshine to port campbell, then as expected, the rains came down again! it cleared for the hill climb just after passing the 12 apostles, but came back with a vengence! pently of hail, strong winds, low clouds, spray from passing cars. only got stuck once behind a dickweed in an old semi that refused to pull over in any of the 3 turnout spots before he turned to colac instead of following the GOR.

got to apollo bay in around 2 1/2 hrs, put enough fuel in to get me back home, cos it was $1.629 a litre for base fuel, and headed inland up the skenes creek (deathtrap) road. 80km/h main speed limit, some stretches it's 100km/h, most tight corners are posted between 40-65, had a few that weren't posted at all, which i thought were safe to do 80 round... oh no, they needed to be taken at 40, but of course i was way too hot for, came close to heading down the embankment. one secion of road was freshly laid, the rest had ruts and holes, no guard rails for most of the way...i still couldn't believe that it was recommended as 100km/h for any of the stretch, i only managed to hit 100 twice!

go home in the end, went to take a bath and there's no plugs anywhere that fit the drain, so i wasted half the hot water already and hadn't even started my shower.

sorry for this being so disjointed, i have crap abilities at keeping things coherent. (like you don't already know reading this bloody thread)

things i learnt this sunday/monday weekend: the ke20 entices rain, speed limits lie, finns can't play afl, kangaroo shouldn't be cooked past medium-rare and any corolla can drive any distance as long as it makes it out of the driveway!

you think so Ted??? the only thing you can see (with the bonnet shut) is a new exhaust, rear wheels and headunit. oh, and the thick dust layer that's making it look very orange-y.

i'll put some pics up of "Peter's Lip Service" haha, sounds soooo gay.

man, sooooo much has happened to this since the last post -pause- NOT!

04102008.jpg

here's some ke70 seats i picked up from Dave (TE278U) originally for shitaxe (the car in the background) but they don't bolt up to ke30-55 sedan rails. so i checked them out on my spare ke20 rails, and they're a perfect match, so i left the rails on and bolted them into the 20  they don't suit the car or match anything, but they are DAMN comfy!

shocks are being shipped shortly, i've got a heater panel to pick up from the post office (thanks ke20rolla) and possibly will be bolted in with a brake upgrade before christmas (if i can get shitaxe outta the carport before then)
