well as things have finally worked themselves out, i'll be taking hold of a 5K in the next few week, i just need to pick it up. :D

the 3K in my 20 has nothing wrong with it, but i feel she needs some more oomph. the obvious choice would be putting the 5K into the 20, but $-wise it isn't so great. so after some very quick thinking i will be putting the 5K into my 55, along with a k50 box i just pulled out from the parts car.

now i'll be left with a mechanically sound 4K and 4spd box, and it'd be a waste to see it sitting in the shed for any lengths of time, so i will be putting it into my 20.

the only thing i can think of not fitting are the gear-stick hole, and the tail shaft. the gear-stick is a problem that can be fixed with a welder and cutter, but the tail shaft isn't something i can do myself :( will i need to get a shorter tail shaft? is there anything else i might have problems with?

thanks df

if the 4 speed you're talking about and the one in the 20 don't match (different shifter position etc) no reason why you shouldn't put the 4K into the 20 with the 4 speed that's already in there.

Unless you currently have an auto in the 20, I don't see a problem - even then, you might be lucky and everything fits with the K40.

Things to watch out for are:

- number of splines on the gearbox output shaft must match the tailshaft

- shifter positions can be different due to different transmission extension housings

- if you try to mix and match tailshafts, check that the diff mounting flage is correct

The 4K in my KE25 sits in front of a K40 that was originally strapped to the previous 3K motor.

good luck!

to put a 30 box in a 20 yes you make a new shifter hole in the floor, and use the yoke of an early 30 tailshaft with external uni clips, goes on your 20 tailshaft to change spline, box is the same length so original shaft still fits

well i picked up my new engine over the weekend

(and a whole heap of misc. crap that is attached to the ke35, like extractors, woodgrain steering wheel, k50, taillights, uncracked dash)

been driving it around for the last few days, and boy has it been fun :D

now, after finding out that i can put the 5k into the ke20 without needing an engineers report, it's all systems go :)

stripping will begin this saturday, and it should be completed by the following weekend.

i'll try and keep a diary-like thing happening.

cheers df

well, stripping stalled on the first day, had to clean all my parts out of the spare room as my gf acquired a roommate. which as a bonus, means i have someone to help me pull gear out of the ke35 :)

well, the parts car is officially stripped, doors, windows, bonnet, guards, seats, dash, steering components, boot, rear axle and diff...only the fuel tank and carpet are left :D it should be skull-dragged by saturday the latest, then the ke20 will be moved in to begin the swap.

started cleaning the 5K sunday arvo and discovered it'd been painted previously. one less thing i need to do  so i just cleaned if of the grease and dirt.

i'll try and get pics up of the parts car in the next few days.

should be another 2 weeks and the 20 will be 5k powered...

the 35 coupe was dragged away saturday morning...and within 30 mins the ke20 was in it's place awaiting surgury. took a few hours on my own (as my mates were too busy being hungover from a party the night before) but i got the loom wires disconnected, exhaust and inlet removed, and all the other little things connecting the engine to the body taken off.

engine and box came out sometime in the arvo with the help of one mate...the proceeded to swap a few little things across from the 3k to the 5k.

started again sunday evening, put the 5 spd box in place then lowered the engine in (with extractors still attached) and tried to get it to fit snugly on the mounts...no luck half an hour later. gave up for the nite.

the extractors i was going to leave on had to be removed as they were fouling on the passenger footwell :lolcry: so it'll be stock exhaust until i can get them adjusted and my side pipe made/installed. (i spent an hour talking to one of the local engineers/vehicle testers who gave me the all clear on a straight swap from 3k to 5k and installing the side pipe. f**king ripper :lolcry::D)

called vicroads during work time yesterday, and after spending 30mins on hold i found i have to show my car and have proof i own the engine :) so i'm tracking down who i bought my engine from for a receipt, as i didn't bother with one when i bought it...

after another few hours last nite, i managed to get the engine and box kinda together... and i don't think the engine is sitting properly, as it's resting on the front swaybar. won't have time to have a proper look at it until saturday. will have it running on sunday...even if i have to stay up til some AM hour monday morning!

i spent ~8 lazy, alcohol consuming hrs finishing up the 5k swap.

got it running sunday arvo with the standard 3k carbie and exhaust. was running on 3 cyl for a bit, managed to get all 4 working not long after.

was idling somewhere upwards of 2k.

drove to put some more fuel in it, got back and started to take it apart again

will be putting the extractors and 5k carbie back on it to see if it likes them a bit more.

the timing might also be out, but will get that sorted after i swap the exhaust/carbie.

will (should) be running again tonite by about 9pm.

i'm quite disappointed in myself...i didn't get it running until 9:15 last night  my train home was delayed by a half hour, so i'll blame that :o

took me all of 45mins to take the old exhaust and inlet off and install the extractors and original inlet.

is running at about 11 degrees BTDC on 92 unleaded. sounds like a bloody truck atm when running under the carport, you can feel the car shake at low rpm :hmm:

taking it for a spin tonite up to thenobblers place...maybe fit a bit of a muffler to the extractors to quieten it down a little before getting my custom exhaust made on saturday.

i will try and get pics and maybe vid up sometime in the next week or so...

took it out for a drive last nite to nobblers...it wasn't so much a drive, more like a jackhammer with wheels! so bloody noisy with just extractors, makes no power without a heap of revs, and it's got a miss also :lolcry: changing the leads and plugs to try and get rid of it.

it's booked in for saturday morning at 8am to get its pipes hooked up...should be some sort of drivable by lunchtime. it's gonna be one hell of a trip to the exhaust shop, 40kms of pure noise, i think i'll be putting ear plugs in and possibly ear muffs over them to drown out the noise :fuzz:

well the exhaust is on now, still noisy as hell, but with it coming out behind you instead of underneath you :rolls: need to trim the outlet to make it legal, also might fix my rear window to be permanently shut...

installed the gear boot from the coupe, had to drill some screw holes to fit it properly, no more exhaust gases or rocks coming in anymore.

fixed up a vacuum leak i had (cheers nobbler) and will be going over everything again in a few days time to track down some more (if it has more)

still need to adjust the timing a bit, possibly get a new dizzy cap cos it's still got a bit of a miss :drgrim: also havn't been to vicroads yet to get the engine numbers changed.

found i don't have a thermostat in it atm, will be hunting down my old 4k one and throwing that in there on sunday.

oh, and pics will be coming....someday :lolcry:

cheers dF

might try and get some of the boys around and have a day in.

another quick and useless update.

got another set of extractors on the way (thanks to kangaroosa) will be shaving an inlet manifold down at some stage to run the current extractors on another car.

looking at another exhaust setup for it, atm it's quite illegal (a bit too loud and too low) something that's quiet and looks a bit more normal (ie not out the side)

will be installing the weber once the new extractors and exhaust are on, which will be after the drag meet, but at least i'll have something to try and beat. the old power figure was 26.2rwkw with the stock 3k, so i'll be above that :P i'll make sure i get a torque figure as well when i send it for a tune (and possible re-jet).

it's still in desparate need of a clean, been about 8 months with one wash :)
