For the past couple of months I've been getting badgered by a friend who wants me to compete in the modern regularity races at Mallala, over the last couple of months each weekend it's been on, I haven't been able to make it (engine being replaced, turbo blowing up, family problems etc., etc.,) but last weekend, I managed to get down there to spectate. It was lots of fun. At first I was a bit worried about participating, because although I think I'm a good driver I was scared I'd do something "novicey" and cause an accident, I worried about my interaction with other cars on the track etc.... so I went to spectate and see what it was all about....

The first heat I was thinking to myself "I don't think I can do this", then as the day progressed I started to notice the lines people were taking, the fact that the cars there weren't jockying for first place. In fact, there were only two passing incidences in the three heats that I watched, as each heat passed, I started thinking, well maybe I CAN do this....

So planning has started for my debut race in my rolla! :P I need to get my CAMS license, a fire extinguisher, a helmet, my number, and a pair of covered shoes, a tow sticker and a battery sticker. (I think that's it). I spoke to my tyre people today and I'm going to run my current wheels and tyres and possibly keep them just for racing, A if I'm good enough and B if I don't scare the crap out of myself.

So at the moment I'm really excited, with a healthy does of caution chucked in :D

Has any one done this type of racing before, and if so, do you have any comments???

They recently introduced a series up here called the Streetcar Shootout, where you set a lap time time before you go racing (after practice though), and then you have to get each lap as close to that time as possible. You start each race with 50 points, and for every 0.1 of a second under that lap, you lose five points, for every .2 over you lose one point (or something like that anyway).

That's modern regularity isn't it?

If so, it's a GREAT way to start racing.

Ancullen... ur pretty much on the money there... apart from differences in how points are awarded/subtracted maybe.

There is virtually no overtaking as cars are usually sent out with space in between each on track... great idea for beginners and people not wanting panel damage lol.

and i may be wrong... but not sure if you even need a CAMS license to participate... i think you maybe be able to get a day license, similar to what happens on practice days

on another note... state titles are on this wkend at mallala, including improved production, which has one very fast KE55... haha

should be well worth look if ya can get out there!

ok, couldn't find the info, so I re-searched.... here's some links and more info:

basically what happens is:

You have between 5 and 8 practice laps and your times are recorded. Then based on your times, they stagger the delay between when each car starts (it's a running start not a from stationary position...

You then pick a time to match (note I said match and not beat!)so, say you do a 1.35.8 lap a 1.34.4, 1.35.8, 1.35.4, 1.35.5, 1.34.1 you'd pick a likely average (or if you felt that laps three and four felt good) then you nominate a time, say 1.35.5

There are three heats (usually) for the day.

You do a "race" of 5 laps and you need to consistently aim for your nominated time (however after each heat you can re-nominate a time) I can't remember which way it is, but if you're slower you get penalised for 1 point per 100th second and you get penalised 2 points for every 100th second you're over (or vice a versa), and they're accumulated over the day and at the end of the day, the person with the LEAST amount of points wins ..... so .....

if you did 1.35.5 you get 0 points if you did 1.35.6 you get 2 points and if you did 1.35.4 you get 1 point

the Toyota Echo that one had 24 points for the day and the Lotus Exige S had something like 635 the point is, so long as you're consistant in your times, you'll be ok :P

You do need a CAMS licence, but you can get one just for the day, other info is below:

STANDING REGULATIONS – MODERN REGULARITY

1. PREAMBLE

Regularities are variation of circuit rules to allow those competitors who choose not to race, to run their vehicles for

the enjoyment of themselves. It is a competition of setting consistent lap times. The continuing existence of

regularities relies upon the exercise of common sense, and, more particularly, good judgement on the part of

organisers in accepting or rejecting entries for specific events. Gross variation in potential speed is not condoned.

2. SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Event organisers must be aware that widespread disparity of nominated lap times is undesirable in the interest of

safety. Lap times likely to be nominated by competitors should be taken into account when arranging fields.

Alternatively, organisers may assemble fields according to vehicle type or category. Dicing by competitors shall not

be tolerated. Once a competitor has been passed they may not repass the car that passed them for the remainder of

that lap. No passengers may be carried in vehicles.

3. DETERMINATION

At a time prior to the event set by the organisers, each competitor will nominate a designated lap time (to the tenth of a

second) for the event. Organisers have the right to refuse to accept a nominated time if it is deemed unreasonable. In

such case, the competitor will be required to nominate an alternative lap time acceptable to the organisers. For each

lap on which the competitor records a lap time less than his nominated time, a penalty of 2 points per tenth of a second

of the error shall apply, and for each lap greater than his nominated lap time a penalty of 1 point per tenth of a second

of the error shall apply. The winner is the competitor who has completed the required number of laps and has accrued

the least penalty points. Once the competitor has completed the required number of laps no further scoring for that

competitor shall apply. Any subsequent laps must be timed (see 4 below).

4. LAP TIMES

The organisers shall nominate a minimum lap time for each event. A maximum nominated lap time of 130% of the

minimum lap time can be accepted. After practice the Secretary of the Event reserves the right to vary the minimum

time with the Stewards approval to best suit the competitors entered. Due account of the field should be considered

and there should be some headroom for any competitor to 'break' their time. There however, should not be too much

time so as to compromise the safety of the event. Any competitor, who records a lap time lower than the minimum

time, shall be excluded from the event and a black flag shown to the competitor. (This also includes any extra laps

that a faster car may get in after their prescribed laps; therefore all laps must be timed).

5. TRACK DENSITIES

The maximum track density for any event shall be as listed on the track licence.

6. ELIGIBLE CARS

Vehicles complying with schedule A & B are eligible. 'Cruise Controls' are not to be used.

7. EVENT STARTING

Competitors shall be marshalled in the pit lane or marshalling area (as appropriate to the circuit layout) in order of

nominated lap times, with the fastest cars in the front. At the commencement of the event the cars are to be directed to

enter the circuit one at a time until all cars have entered for a warm-up lap. Timing will commence for each car as it

crosses the start/finish line at the beginning of the trial period (flying start) and will continue until the prescribed

number of laps is completed. Competitors may continue until the end of the event is declared by the showing of the

'chequered flag. Competitors must be ready to start when a 1 minute board is shown to the field before the start.

Failing to be ready when the 1 minute board has been shown shall preclude that competitor from starting in the event.

8. COMPETITOR REQUIREMENTS

Competitors will be required to produce a CAMS Level 2S Licence as a minimum, together with proof of current

membership of a CAMS affiliated car club.

9. SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Drivers must wear helmets and, in open vehicles, goggles/visors complying with Schedule D. CAMS recommend that

competitors wear an approved full-face helmet when driving in open vehicles (refer Schedule D). Fire resistant

clothing is not mandatory, but drivers must wear woollen or cotton clothing covering the body from ankles to wrist

and neck, and suitable footwear.

10. GENERAL

Vehicle logbooks are not mandatory, but if a logbook has been issued, it must be presented at scrutineering.

Hope this helps
