WGMG - wheel studs

Bitch to get out, bigger bitch to get new ones in. I'm biting the bullet and buying an air-compressor/rattlegun tomorrow

i found the rattlegun slower than doing it with a ratchet, big powerful rattlegun too.

just line them up, put a few washers on, andrun the nut on, make sure the splines are in line and wind it on with the ratchet, finish it off with a big breaker bar or torque wrench.

if your going out and buying a compressor and rattlegun just for this job, i doubt your actually going to get a compressor big enough to flow the air to keep up with a rattle gun, and will just end up giving yourself the shits.

i did 6 on my ute in about 30 minutes, thats removal and refit...

as a note, make sure they really are in there tight as can be, if not you end up with loose wheel nuts the next day if they slip in that 'little bit' further.

cheers, andy

I've tried doing it with a breaker bar, the main problem is that I need 3 nuts just to be able to get the socket over the end of the stud. That, and it's been taking about 30 minutes to get two studs halfway in, and I'm worrying about stripping the threads or the spline if I put too much consistent torque on the studs - better to get an impact wrench and hit is with short, sharp bursts.

And I've been putting off getting an air-compressor for a long time, I knew I was going to crack and get one eventually but now is a good time as I've finally got money.

Might still give it one last shot with the ratchet though, just to make sure - still got a whole other wheel to go after this one too though.

i did more damage to a thread with the rattlegun, but its up to you to try it.

what do you mean you need 3 nuts just to get the socket over the end of the stud? are you using a short socket? probably much easier if you had a long socket, i put about 4 washers to clear the blank section that comes through the hub, then just ran the nut on.

Even with a long socket it would be a stretch, the studs are significantly longer than stock.

Anyway, got a few different angles to try this afternoon, see if any of them bear fruition.

Mozzies: The little f@$kers were out in force this evening after having a shitload of rain last week. Haven't had a problem with them in ages as it has been so dry. I must admit it is nice having green grass for a change.

People burning shit off: Someone is burning some crap off locally atm. It sux as it has been so hot today and now would be an ideal time to open up the house and get some fresh cool airflow through the joint to clear out the days heat. There is a nice cool breeze now outside, but we've had to close the whole house up as the smoke smell outside is very plasticy and stinks something shocking.
