666westy999 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 my mate has an 1981 RA40-R celica GT-2000, it was one of our mates fathers car and he babied it for many years, he sold it to my mate for quite a decent price and it was in excellent condition both mechanically and visually. ne ways, it has an 18RG in it (2ltr DOHC, stock form roughly 150ish hp) which is not the original engine i believe? i was wondering if ne one call fill me in on the engine pros and cons? i know that it is fairly rare, and goes bloody hard.... that however is no technical knowledge. i want to know what you can do with these engines, if ne one knows, how much HP they r capable of and roughly how much and engine is worth???? i understand these are all very broad questions but any info or knowledge ne one has on the 18rg and the GT-2000 model celica will be much appreciated. cheers all westy Quote
styler Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 try toymods as the 18rg is a lot more popular on there with the celica boys. try some searches and i think theres even a whole thread on 18rg specs, mods and parts. Quote
Des Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 If its an original ra40 gt its worth a f@$k load. 18RG come in different variants ie 18RG 18RGR 18RGU 18RGEU. 18RG is the most power full with 9.7:1 compression ratio around 145 - 150hp. 18RGU's are relatively common, My best mate has 2 of them so... He paid $250 for a long motor with a rebuilt head and $900 for a running complete engine. The Witzl and River on toymods.net know alot more than i and they have alot more experience with them. Oh yeah, Can be a very expensive engine if you let it. Quote
flat out Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 very heavy i might add, and over priced in my opinion Quote
anastasios Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 lol compared to a 5k? i think they are overpriced Quote
Hiro Protagonist Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 Yes, the 18RG was standard in the RA40 GT, any RWD Celica that was a GT model had the 18RG in it (maybe some had EFI etc), except for the TA22 GT which had the 1600 2TG in it Pros: Sounds orgasmic with twin sidedraughts Solid power Reliability Fair bit of aftermarket support and huge knowledgebase (if you can get into Toymods) Cons: Getting rare and expensive Later models had significantly less power Stock twin Solexes can prove problematic Heavy as a boat anchor About as big as one too Quote
chrisandliz[RL] Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 WARNING WARNING WARNING These engines don't go into valve float, they will just put a valve into the piston. please don't rev past red line. I have seen 3 18rg and all 3 put the valves into the pistons (about 8000RMP) not to say don't get it, but head goes on it you are looking at $700 to a flat Grand to get it redone. hope this was helpfull Chris Quote
666westy999 Posted August 17, 2007 Author Report Posted August 17, 2007 thanks all, info is great!!!! helped alot! if the car was IMMACULATE, engine neva been driven hard, been reved to no more than 6k-rpm only occasionally in about 2nd, peders shocks and srpings rear, stock on front i think, sports tyres all round etc etc.... would the $4500 mark be pretty cheap? cheers again :) Quote
7shades Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 If its relatively unmolested and in decent nick (and a genuine GT) you've got yourself a bargain fella. I had one many moons ago (when they weren't quite as rare) and I butchered it and turned it into a rally car... :) stoopid stoopid stoopid Quote

LittleRedSpirit Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 (edited) Buy it, does it have rear discs? Looks awesome. I have a mate who would snap it up in a second for 4500. How rare are these things exactly? Edited August 17, 2007 by LittleRedSpirit Quote
Des Posted August 17, 2007 Report Posted August 17, 2007 Ive been looking for parts for a mate and came up with zilch. Should be a disc brake T series or disc brake F series ? Quote
