7shades Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 (edited) So I'm sure a lot of you have heard the rumours and seen the pics... So I thought I make a thread to dump pics, links etc. (rather than the arse end of the Aurion thread...) Chuck em up kids "Within days of announcing Toyota's formation of a "Committee to create interesting cars," this summer's Best Car Plus magazine reveals that the long-rumoured new AE86 type car has indeed been spawned by the group and should be in showrooms in the winter of 2008. The new article goes into some detail of the new car's spec. Under 4m (157½") long and 1.7m (67") wide, it's pretty low at 1.35m (53") tall, and engineers have been directed to keep weight below 1,000kgs (2200 lbs). Power will come from a 1.5L 2NZ-FE (the Toyota Echo/Yaris/Scion xA & 1st-gen Scion xB engine) good for 120 horsepower (interesting, as it only puts out 106 hp in its current state of tune). What has been unknown until this time is where Toyota would source a cheap RWD drivetrain, but Best Car has learned that it will come from new partner Fuji Heavy Industries - better known to you and me as Subaru. And the best news of all? The committee's final directive is to keep the new car's sticker price below 1.5million Yen. That's about $12,300 USD in today's money." I'd buy one... or three... :o Lets just hope its not all a monsterous crock of shit... Edited August 4, 2007 by 7shades Quote
shane-o Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 Not being a Toyota fanboy, I reckon that looks f@$ken sick. You can really see AE86 design cues from the rear/side, not too sure about the front but. The hachi never looked particularly aggressive and that was part of the charm of them. Still, good on them, can't wait to see the end result. Quote
JiP Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 Do you think they will call it a Corolla or Sprinter or something to do with AE86?? Quote
Raven Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 Looks a little RX-8ish to me from that front side pic. Back end reminds me of an Astra. You'd wanna hope they come out with some sort of aggressive body kit and colour-code those bumpers. Quote
chrisandliz[RL] Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 now give it to me angry and less aerodinamic, and i'll be in it. Don't like all the touchie feelie crap, I want to be able to see out the rear window, who gives a shit if your passagers are saver and less likely to died in a rear end accadent. Do you really need a boot that you can fit a dead body and still comfortabley store a pram and a weeks shopping for a family of 4! HELL NO. You need to see the f@$king polls that are stuck all over car parks ready to cripple your car like mini land mines every where. RANT RANT RANT. make it more ugly please. Quote
towe001 Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 Body looks good but the face looks like Ugly Betty's been hit with a cyborg mask. But if its going to be RWD i'd be kinda interested to where their going to source the g'box from. Yeah, maybe Subaru for the drive train, but i can't really see them re-tooling for a RWD-only g'box for such a "cheap", eco-box type car (but then again, they could just wack a couple of plates over the holes for the front driveshafts, etc and re-tool for a new bellhousing). My guess would be that if their planning on keeping it within toyota the g'box would be, maybe, hi-lux (super-super strong). For the price their planning on i'd more then likely see it as FWD then rear drive. Unless alot of the parts are going to be inter-changeable with the Echo/Yaris models to keep the cost down for a new g'box. Quote
Redwarf Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 I hate to burst your collective bubbles, but I can't see anything truly exciting coming from the current Toyota "make it safe and paint it grey" mentality. 1.5l echo motor? Whoa, hold me back! Love the shape, but I fear they're going to crucify it with the running gear. Oh (insert relevant superior being here) please let Toyota do the right thing! Quote
andro0o Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 they've been saying this for way too long i'll wait til the car comes out before i believe it. its gay anyways, why destroy a cult classic. Quote
7shades Posted August 4, 2007 Author Report Posted August 4, 2007 From what I've read, it does seem kinda feasable. What they appear to be doing is making a cheap n cheerful 'bitza' out of previous generation drivetrains, suspension etc. In this way, the R&D has already been done, and the costs thereof have already been absorbed by sales of the vehicle they were originally developed for. The only tricky parts are the RWD 'box and possibly diff, but if a suitable toyota 'box can't be used, they may just come from subaru or diahatsu, with a bellhousing made to suit the 2NZ. I've heard tell that the rwd floorpan is in fact a cut-down and lightened version of the IS200/Altezza pan... which would explain the short overhangs and cab-forward design. Hopefully it will share the suspension components as well. Two things to bear in mind though. Yes, its an Echo motor. Not exactly happy-in-your-pants material, but they're a tried and tested and generally unf@$kable motor. Plus, 88kw in a 1000kg rwd is still going to be a buttload more fun than the equivalent fwd dreck getting around... Bigger would be better of course... but its all speculation and conjecture at the moment so I guess we'll see. Also, given Toyota's history of not releasing the fun stuff in AU for fear of undercutting sales of their own bread-n-butter beigemobiles, its unlikely we'll even see them in aussie showrooms. Which is bad, and yet good. Bad, because we'll have to wait a couple of years for them to become eligible for import under SEVS. Good, because they'll be CHEAP... and cheap purchase price means more money left over for engine conversions... :o We'll see... Quote
Jono Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 maybe it will use a commercial series gearbox like from a....townace! Quote
philba Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 Found all this on Toysnobs http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j143/old...rollaDrift1.jpg "In a move that might worry AE86 enthusiasts, Toyota will consider targeting the BMW 1 Series with a wagon version of its FR Compact Sports Car. This wagon variation of its compact FR sports theme is being considered along with the aforementioned coupe, and even a sedan. Three variations of the ‘Spiritual AE86 Replacement' are being considered, with a coupe being the most likely to be chosen in a move that could help breathe life back into Toyota's sports car line up. The wagon variation offers the most practicality and would compete directly with the BMW 1 Series and (to a lesser extent) Subaru Impreza, however Toyota is well aware of the popularity a compact FR coupe model would have over a wagon and will definitely take this into account. A sedan, rather like a smaller version of the superseded Toyota Altezza would be more practical than the coupe, although this outcome is the least likely at this stage. Since our last report, a 1.8L engine is now being considered along with a top grade 2.0L engine incorporating Toyota's new ‘Valvetronic' valve control technology which will put to rest some concern whether the previously mentioned 1.5L engine could provide enough power to warrant a sports car classification. This is not to say a 1.5L engine will not be offered, as Subaru already offer the same capacity engine in its current Impreza line up. There is still little in the way of reliable information surrounding the power plant of the Toyota FR compact sports car but we can safely assume that the new engine will have some form of Valvetronic control, and no forced induction of any kind. Toyota product planners are well aware of the appeal a proper AE86 replacement has amongst the younger generation of buyers, as this new FR sports car is being designed primarily for that section of the market. It is a little surprising though that it seems now Toyota is backpedalling slightly, putting more emphasis on competing with rival models rather than reopening a niche segment with a direct AE86 successor in the true sense. Just as we reported earlier, it is now apparent after much research being carried out by Toyota that the FR compact sports car will indeed be sold at or slightly above 1,500,000 yen! We mentioned before that this was a virtual impossibility, but Toyota plans to use an ‘unprecedented amount' of parts already used in cars in its current line up, therefore keeping production costs at a minimum. How this will affect the final outcome of the FR compact sports car is anyone's guess at the moment, but we will have the news right here for you as it appears. A 2+2 front engine, rear wheel drive sports car is planned to be the sprititual successor to the AE86 Toyota Sprinter Trueno/Corolla Levin, unbelievably at a price cheaper than the discontinued Toyota MR-S… Toyota enthusiasts should be happy with the latest news from the Japanese magazine ‘Best Car', with news that Toyota is bringing back the soul of the now famous AE86 Trueno/Levin twins in an all new compact 2+2 sports coupe. It's no suprise that the rumoured pricing target of 1,500,000 yen is almost too cheap to believe, but this is in fact what Toyota are aiming for. The idea behind the project is to create ‘a car that appeals to young people' with a price that they would be able to afford (the ramifications of this we'll discuss later). This same idea harks back to the early 1980's when the original AE85 series Corollas were introduced, where relatively cheap and reliable cars were sold with just enough interior niceties to keep buyers happy, and the price to a minimum. There are no Toyotas in the RWD compact sports category since the MR-S was discontinued in April this year, and the 2+2 configuration should give the new compact sprts car a wider appeal than the strictly 2 seater MR-S. The target selling price of 1,500,000 yen does seem almost too good to be true, and the basic model may actually increase to around 1,800,000 - 2,000,000 yen by the time it's released, which is still reasonable if the car's specifications are adequate enough. But this is where some people might start worrying… It's been hinted that the ‘New AE86′ will be powered by a 1500cc four cylinder engine producing 120ps/6000rpm and 14.8kgm/3800rpm coupled to a traditional 5 speed manual transmission. This may seem like a half hearted effort by Toyota, but the total weight of the car is expected to be around 1000kg which would be quite close, even too close, to the original AE86's specification. A simple theme will give the car much of the soul of the last RWD Trueno/Levin and should keep costs down below the 2,000,000 yen mark. The artist's rendition shown here includes black plastic bumpers much like the AE86 models had, with clean lines and minimal overhangs which, if it's close to the mark, would almost guarantee a sales success." Like I said, I found all this on a thread on Toymods, but the person who posted it didn't say where he got the story from Quote
JiP Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 I like the last one, the red one with the black bumpers. The first set look far too much like the current Astra. Quote
