Hey guys,

Ive heard about this site before....

I'm from fordlaser.com.....

anyway, a mate of mine has a 89 corolla... i know very little about corollas.

the engine in it died, and apparently its terminal.

how hard is it to swap these engines....? ive done it a few times in the laser, so ive got a bit of experience doing this stuff....

also, what engine is in it, and how much should a replacement cost?

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon, it depends which model it is? is it a twin cam engine or single cam carby? either way they are a relatively simple swap

If its an AE90 or 92, its a carby fed 4afc. Cheap as chips to buy and half a days work to swap over. Don't pay more than $400 for even the shiniest motor you can find.

thanks for the quick reply guys....

its nothing flash so id imagine a carby engine, but ive never looked under the bonnet. He is going to have a look for me....

he had been quoted $1500 for the engine.... i thought that was a bit steep considering for $1800 i got a 1.8l turbo half cut for the laser....

I'm in brisbane, but the car is on beerwah on the sunshine coast... any one know any wreckers or engines for sale in that area?

mmm 1500 is waaay over the top... you can get a complete, running AE92 for that kinda dosh. That quote was probably from an engine wholesaler yeah? Those dudes make a killing selling engines to silly girls who cook their festivas and don't know any better...

Have a look in the for sale section of this forum, there might be one floating about in brissy somewhere as there's a shitload of members from this forum down your way.

The good thing about 4afc's is they're either fine, or completely rooted. So as long as you find one you can hear running first, you should be right.

yea i got quoted for a low km swapover motor from $800>1500 (ae82 4AGE), which is kinda cheap cos it includes all labour and warrenty etc..

+ hard to get in good nic these days....

so in ended up buying a low kms 2nd long motor for $200 and did it my self.

i also picked up another long motor for $550 with 3 months warrenty and did the DIY swap over also.
