coln72 Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 I think thats the pilot that landed us in Singapore Quote

Wood§tok Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 (edited) thats whats known as a 'tank slapper' in aviation circles. lol. on the last few bounces he is real lucky the wings didnt come off. Edited July 3, 2007 by Wood§tok Quote
7shades Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Anyone who has ever flown into Wellington airport in anything smaller than a C-5 Galaxy will be familiar with that scenario... Its quite funny watching the more godfearing and pious passengers reciting prayers whilst simultanously re-swallowing the inflight meal :lolcry: Quote
kangaroosa Posted July 3, 2007 Author Report Posted July 3, 2007 (edited) Thought I would back it up with a pilot who has true skills. CLICK Take-Offs from this runway would be an eye opening experience for the passengers. There doesnt appear to be alot of runway left after the pilot slows down sufficiently. Redwarf Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Yep, that one's gutsy. You want to try and find some photo's of the airstrips in PNG. Some of them are on an 8 degree slope, and you can only take off down hill. Quote
Redwarf Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Ooooo here we go..... Kora, 600m, 7%, 5 736' elev - don't overshoot 'cos there is nothing to stop you at the end of this strip... Guwasa, 600m (if you really want the rough erosion at the upper end), 10%, 4 938' elev Gema, 560m, 10%, 5 250' elev - turbine Islander on approach And a few more..... Photo's care of pprune.org. 7shades Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 I've flown into (not so bad) and out of (bad) strips like that in the north and central highlands of PNG, Iriyan Jaya too but most of them are maintained by the mines so they're not quite as bad. The biggest plane we used was a Pilatus PC-6 which is basically an engine with wings strapped to it... Th scariest part isn't the landing, strangely enough, its takeoff... which is essentially aiming the plane downhill at full stick and hoping you get rotation before you run out of airstrip. :lolcry: Landing is easy... throttle down, flaps, point aircraft at middle of strip. When you are directly above the approach end of the strip, cut engine and drop gracefully onto 20% incline. Apply wheel brakes, throttle up... WAY UP... and taxi to the flat bit up the top. Dead easy :no2: Equally as hair-raising are some of the strips in the Solomons... no hills, but sometimes you can't actually see the strip in front of you from 300ft and below as they're so short... just water. sometimes the strips are longer than the actual islands you're landing on. Redwarf Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Yep that's what we're talking about. Those blokes are awesome. Screw that for a day job. First two aren't porters. Probably islanders (I'm not real up on bug smashers) Last two were porters. Those things are freaky. Quote
Raven Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 I've got a vid here. Not a landing or take-off vid, but involves a fighter aircraft and a wall. Who's seen it? Clickity Click! Quote
Wood§tok Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 hamilton island is a hairy one to land on. the runway extends past the ends on the island and the 737s need between 90 and 100 percent rear thrust to stop in time. woot! Quote
