Doogs Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 After reading sim's thread about his problems with fixing his horn, it started me thinking about what the laws actually say about having an air horn fitted to your car some of my mates have them, and i am fairly sure they would'nt be legal, but does anyone know what the law actually says, would it just be the noise laws that it would breach? cheers Quote
Des Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 In QLD if its a single tone horn then its legal if mounted properly etc but if its a multi tone horn ie makes more than one noise its illegal, Thats what i was told by my road worthy inspector. Quote
Xany Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 ^^^^ also what i was lead to believe as well. I'm not sure if you have to have it on a separate switch though as well......don't think you do though. Quote
7shades Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 Horn button must be mounted to steering wheel. Quote
kangaroosa Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 (edited) The only notation that VicRoads have is that "All vehicles must be fitted with one or more effective horns, or other audible warning devices which produce a steady sound with a constant pitch". This includes single note Air Horns. Kinda rules out La Cucaracha and the likes of. Edited June 24, 2007 by kangaroosa Quote
aecorolla Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 Just wondering, how are you going to get into trouble for having more then one tone? unless u play more then one while a cop is listening then that could be ur one tone if that makes sense. Quote
kangaroosa Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 More than one tone Air horns generally play like music. You press and hold the horn button, and the full song plays. So unless you press the horn for <1second, the note will most likely change. Thus alerting the police to your musical air horn. I have had mates that have been defected during roadside roadworthy inpsections because the police have spotted multiple air horn pipes. Besides that, musical airhorns old and lame. Quote
aecorolla Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 thanks for the clarification. i agree air horns are pretty lame Quote
flat out Posted June 24, 2007 Report Posted June 24, 2007 I'm thinking about getting a klackston or what ever style horn they are, the ones that the old ford model T's and stuff would have stock unfortunately my original ones are f@$ked so I'm going to get a falcon horn from the wreckers so i can sound like a taxi :P Quote

I meant that the air horns may need to be on a seperate switch.......the normal horn button and original horns would still work fine. Quote
JiP Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 (edited) You should be alowed to have one for show. But doubt you'd be able to use it on the road. I'd go for the AROOGA sounding one. :P Edited June 25, 2007 by JiP_01 Quote
