7shades Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 aaah goody... you're someone I need to talk to! Whats the deal with the compatibilty of the sierra gearbox to the toyota engines? I know the're very similar, maybe a shared toyota/suzuki design... I've got bits and pieces of info but nothing concrete... are custom bellhousings or adaptor plates required? Also... (sorry to hit you with the 20 questions) do you know much about the similarities of the sierra to the AL25 tercel running gear? ie: transfer case and g/box, front cvs etc etc... Cheers heaps in advance Quote
Aeren Posted January 11, 2007 Author Report Posted January 11, 2007 What's the deal with the compatibility of the sierra gearbox to the toyota engines? They don't bolt up but ive herd you can get a custom bellhousing, but there really rare, the company didn't make them for very long. Ive got a k5 behind the 4k & a t5 sprinter box behind the 4AGE. I don't think the Sierra box would last long behind the 4age, probably go bang...loudly. I just pulled the K5 down to put some new seals & bearings in him and found the hardening on the cluster & shaft is stuffed. Its an older k5 with only the reverse light switch in it. Ive got a k5 from a ke70 for it but the shifter is in a different spot and the mounts are different. look like ill be making a new crossmember again. The newer one might be stonger, I don't know yet. I'm told its the same length and will bolt up to the 4k the same apart from the mounts. similarities of the sierra to the AL25 tercel running gear? not sure if there is any. aren't they an east west engine? the sierra has an independent transfer case, its not attached to the gear box. there is a short drive shaft (called a jack shaft) from the gear box to the transfer case. the sierra has a live axle in the front, lick a rear diff but with swivel hubs with cv's inside them . I don't know, but Id imagine the tercel has an independent front end? Hope I answered your questions at least a little bit, or maybe I just confused you more. I don't know much about tercel in case you were wondering. Sweet rides mate! love the fact that you're smiling with the sierra on its side against the bank :lolcry: Awesome stuff! Me & the boys have a carnage points system :hmm: were you earn points for trail carnage/rockrash when its done by accident while attempting the near impossible. As he old sayen goes, “rollen and beers†:) Quote
Brendo Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 wicked stuff mate, oh and the gearboxes are t50's and k50's rather than t5/k5 Quote
Jono Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 love the stealthy white sierra! well done on your conversion! Quote
7shades Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Yeah thats cool thanks for the info... the early tercels had a north-south A series engine and a separate transfer case with equal length front cvs. full time fwd and selectable 4wd, with the rear live axle diff permanantly locked. really weird setup. I just asked cos there's a bit of a cult following for the tercel in france, and they seem to use a lot of sierra gear. most of the info is too hard to translate though. cheers anyway mate... guess I'll just shoehorn the 4age in and see what breaks first :hmm: Quote
Aeren Posted January 11, 2007 Author Report Posted January 11, 2007 the early tercels had a north-south A series engine and a separate transfer case with equal length front cvs. they wouldnt happen to have low range in the transfer case? Quote
7shades Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Nah not quite. 6 speed g/box with extra low range 1st gear. Not selectable hi-lo like the subies if thats what you're thinking. Quote
beerhead Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 My housemate has a heavily modified bigport in a sierra, what can I say it makes a lethal combination. His diffs last a few years. The transfer case will break first. Quote

Swap the extension housing from the 5 speed you just pulled out onto the KE70 5 speed, and it will bolt straight back in :) I have done this myself on many occasions. The KE70 gearbox will bolt onto the engine identically to the older 5 speed you have Quote
