jamesrolla Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 (edited) is anyone elses car the same as mine, my 1972 ke20 had the id plate on upside down and so does my 1971 car but the 1974 one and the 1973 cars have them up the right way, is anybody elses car the same??? also my 1971 car has drums on the front but unlike the ke10 drums these are twin leading shoe ones so they have two wheel cylinders instead of just one also does anyone have a borg warner diff in their ke20??? my 1971 car has little pull down handles under the dash to open the airvents on the dash, it also has one of those grills with the small squares and the lines on the fuel door go across instead of up and down Edited December 29, 2006 by jamesrolla Quote
irokin Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 also does anyone have a borg warner diff in their ke20??? I believe my 73 KE20 had the plate upside down. All the AMI KE2xs had borg warners except for a brief period in 1973 when there was an issue with supply so some got banjo diffs (like mine had) Quote
jamesrolla Posted December 29, 2006 Author Report Posted December 29, 2006 my 72 ke20 had a banjo diff and so does my 73 car, not sure about the 74 car though my 72 car also had the longer late model tail lights and had a plastic grill like the 73 cars had Quote
Jono Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 my 74 has plate upside down, banjo diff. my 72 has smaller leaf mounts on the front, bw diff. Quote
Redwarf Posted December 29, 2006 Report Posted December 29, 2006 All 20's came out with the plates upside down. Somewhere in the last 35 years, someone probably turned them the right way up. There is quite a number of differences between late and early 20's. Quote
ke20rolla Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 There are 2 types of ke20's, there's an early model 71-72 and a late model 72-74. Just like there are ke10's and ke11's. The early ke20's have small tailights different bootlid, front grill and bonnet and are fitted with drums all round and borg warner diffs. The later ke20's are the first corolla to be fitted with front discs and they all seem to have banjo diffs. They also have the longer tailights, plastic grills and the front indicators are on the side of the guards instead of being in the little plastic corner pieces. :y: Quote
JiP Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 Interesting. So why would have they stuck the ID plates on upside down?? Was the person applying them stoned, drunk or just dislexic?? Quote
irokin Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 Interesting. So why would have they stuck the ID plates on upside down?? Was the person applying them stoned, drunk or just dislexic?? Its so you can stick your head over the guard and look at it close up rather than look at it from several feet away if it were right way up. Quote
Jono Posted December 31, 2006 Report Posted December 31, 2006 early ke20s have different rear suspension mounts and headlight fixing holes are different. Quote
jamesrolla Posted January 1, 2007 Author Report Posted January 1, 2007 i didnt know that ^^^, i also found out that a plastic grill wont bolt into an early car as they have different mounting points, my early car looks like it has been factory fitted with 6 leafs instead of the usaul 4 of my late cars Quote

Both are early & both have discs on front  Quote
Jono Posted April 26, 2007 Report Posted April 26, 2007 since it is a fairly easy upgrade, it may not have been done from the factory. in other markets there is a te21 model, i wonder why our "late ke20" wasn't called a ke21? Quote
coln72 Posted April 27, 2007 Report Posted April 27, 2007 can't help, mine doesn't appear to have an id plate!!!!!!!!! Quote
